Several months ago the AUD surpassed the USD and today sits at: 1 Australian dollar = 1.0767 U.S. dollars.
For a time, games were decent and worth the price. For example, Deus Ex: HR, Portal 2, Fable 3, Dirt 3, Dungeon Siege 3 - all are right now $49.99 USD or less, and a price I am happy to play for a quality title. Import costs be damned. You can't charge twice the price with the same import costs as other titles.
It feels fucking insulting right now and no matter how I voice this, it carries no weight.

2) Surely you can see that there are numerous other factors that come into play. The relative buying power of the dollar is one; I get paid $45K US here, but will get paid $65-$75K AUD for the same position in Australia. Further, there's a number of arguments about supply and demand, and simple "publishers charging what consumers EXPECT to pay". A couple of years back 1 AUD bought 0.50 USD, which likely caused publishers to bump up the prices of games. Now that they're earning more for every game purchase, where's the market force that is persuading them to lower the cost of their games?
Very few industries are directly tied to the USD exchange rate. Yes, Aussies get raped on video games, and electronics, and CDs, and a whole bunch of other things besides when you compare with America. I say it's the price we have to pay for hot women and nice beaches.
