The space faring fox was a critical hit on Nintendo 64 with its 3D scrolling action and multiple game paths.

It has been 20 years since Nintendo released Star Fox 64 for the Nintendo 64. To this day, the series has been popular, but none of the games have quite had the appeal of the 3D scrolling combat game.

Starring Fox McCloud and his Star Fox team of Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi, and Slippy Toad, the game offered numerous boss battles and plenty of action. It was a critical hit with fans and the gaming press, lauded for its animation, voice acting and multiple paths through the game. It even spurred a 3DS reboot in 2011. It also had three multiplayer modes for up to four players, and has made numerous Top 100 games lists throughout its lifetime. The Guinness Book of World Records lists it as the 45th greatest game of all time.

We have a lot of old-school gamers here at Shacknews, and we want to hear some of your best stories about Star Fox 64. Just click the Chatty link and share. Long live Fox McCloud and the Star Fox legacy.

I may have spent more time in that game's battle mode with my friends than Mario Kart 64's. Tough call though. We liked hunting the little dudes on foot.

Also, I'm pretty sure this is when I started using dink as my handle in games: https://usebombswisely.com/quitdinkinaround

      Ugh, I feel old.

I don't have any specific stories but I adored this game when it came out. I replayed the game so many times because of the branching and 9 year old me was so impressed by the story changing based on your actions in levels.

I just remember that I could never make it far in that game at all, but my girlfriend at the time had a little brother in elementary school who would just decimate that game every time he played it. I was a bit jealous.

The game included a rumble pack didn't it?

You could buy it standalone, I think, but it did also have a rumble pak pack-in version.

It is the game that gave us, "Do a barrel roll!"

I loved StarFox on the SNES.

Multiplayer on StarFox 64 was pretty fun, though I hated playing with my nephews after a while. They became masters of the mini-map and basically were using their sharp, young, evil eyes to play 99% of the game on the mini-map only looking at the 3D view to kill me.

It was a fun game though, but I still prefer the SNES game -- I kind of wish Nintendo would remake it that just sailed at 90fps or something. ;)

I remember All-Range-Mode and the ridiculous rumble in the rumble pack, I don't think any game since then has rumbled harder. Beating it via the hard route was pretty fun.

To hell with the dock level and hitting every single spotlight, AND the tank level and hitting all of the gates. I think I did the latter ONCE and I don't think I ever beat the cloaking device boss.

Oh yeah, I spent hours on both of those, I think they were the last two I beat to 100% it.

Many, many hours spent huddled around my friend's 19" CRT TV playing multiplayer.
