Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Wins Donation War for 9th EVO 2017 Spot
The fund-raising effort was not without its controversy, however.
EVO 2017 had chosen eight games for this year's fighting game tournament, but left a ninth spot open based on whichever community donated the most to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The winner: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 … at least for now.
The tournament is looking into possible irregularities in the donation process where contributors might cancel their pledges – known as charge backs – after their game won.
The Generosity donation drive garnered almost $150,000 from the fighting game community, with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 pulling in $71,690 for almost 1,500 donors. Pokken Tournament finished second with $66,906 donated by 744 donors. EVO said that it would donate $10,000 to support 2017 Pokken tournaments this year because of the strong second-place showing.
Joey Cuellar, head of EVO, said that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was “unofficial” winner at this time because it was looking into charge back allegations that had popped up on reddit and 4Chan, where individuals explained how they could allegedly rig the voting. He said the result of their inquiry into the matter “will factor into our decision.”
If the game is indeed declared the winner, Cuellar said the PS4 version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be used in the tournament.
EVO 2017 will be taking place at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas on July 14-16. The other eight game previously announced were BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, Injustice 2, Street Fighter 5, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Tekken 3 and The King of Fighters 14.
