Mass Effect: Andromeda trailer shows off New Earth and some bad guys

With 20,000 people depending on them, the Pathfinders go out and explore.

"I don't need an army. I have a Krogan."

BioWare and EA have released the promised story trailer for Mass Effect Andromeda, and while we get little in-game play, we do get a look at New Earth, a planet that hopefully would serve as "safe harbor" for a ship of 20,000 stranded in unfirendly space. And speaking of friendly, we meet the bad guys - The Archons - who like to throw around intimidating statements like "Surrender or burn."

It's an interesting and inviting look at the new direction the franchise is taking, along with having the familiarity of some of the previous races. The Pathfinder team sets out to expore the unknown space around New Earth - also known as Habitat 7 - and their encounter with the Archons leads to the fun lead-in line above.

There is also an Andromeda Initative briefing video where players getto meet the Pathfinder team of from  Ark Hyperion, including Pathfinder Alec Ryder, his children Scott and Sarah Ryder, Crisis Responder Liam Kosta and Operations Specialist Cora Harper, who together will lead humanity’s discovery of new worlds in the Andromeda Galaxy

Only a couple more months until we can get our hands on the game, which comes out on PS4, Xbox One and PC on March 21.

It's the one and only story Bioware has ever told.

I'm legitimately afraid I can't do it anymore.

A new fucking galaxy. Endless possibilities. No limits.

          Same boilerplate story?

At least we'll have MP. Which I never thought I'd say about a BioWare game.

Story-wise, the character development will be much more important to me than the overall story.

What was their last great character?

          Gay Quorn?
          Claudia Black?
          Manic Pixie Dream Elf?

DA had none. Anything from ME3? I feel the last one was Mordin.

            Kai Leng.

Seriously though, in ME2 they criminally underused Legion. He was awesome, conversing with an entire species at once.

ME3 was basically 1+2 characters with some randoms.

I loved most of ME2's cast.

DAI had some fun ones too (I liked Sera, Vivienne, and the gay mage whose name I can't remember).

Really, it's just ME3's characters that were mostly duds, IMO.

am i missing something? they go to a new galaxy on an arkship to explore and find a backup home and they find some aliens that don't want them there? that doesn't seem like the same story.

It sounds like they have multiple ark ships, each with its own pathfinder, scouting out it's own little part of Andromeda. So if this game works out for Bioware, maybe we get to see other ark ships and their own stories.

I just watched the Cora Harper video below again and there are 7 "habitat" sites. And she says she's 2nd in command in the Human pathfinder team. So looks like there are 7 arks and 7 pathfinder teams and her team is headed for habitat 3.

Some interesting points in the video:

"Every Ark has its own Pathfinder" meaning they sent out multiple Ark teams.

And Cora is second command, yet somehow one of the Ryder twins jumped over her to become Pathfinder when Alec Ryder is incapacitated.

A lot of the fun biotic powers get really neutered on the harder difficulties. On the easier difficulties the powers actually do cool shit since enemies aren't all sporting multiple protective layers of shields and whatnot.

Adept is pretty good in ME3 though. The biotic explosions are super satisfying. They're devastating against mobs if you use the dark channel power to set up explosions.

I'm really excited for this. Mass Effect is my favorite original new Sci-Fi universe in years. I'd love to someday see movies and/or TV series set in the ME universe. In the meantime, I'll pretty much play any game they put out in that setting.

I dream of a PvE Mass Effect game similar to Destiny and The Division.

The game would take place before the trilogy and you play as a non-human Spectre working on behalf of the council taking out bad guys and all that.

It'd have the exploration aspect of the first game by letting you visit hubs and outposts on the various planets. And then you can coop it up with a squad like the multiplayer in ME3.

The world of Mass Effect is way more interesting than the ones in Destiny and The Division. I think it'd be great if they can create a living version of Mass Effect one can play in without having to deal with the human political drama and Reapers from the campaign.

The combat and multiplayer in ME3 was great and I played the crap out of it. But the problem with ME3 is that it was limited in scope because the Reapers were already there. But if you can set it up in a normal ME galaxy where you can fight merc groups like Blue Suns or gangs in the Terminus systems, I think it'd be fun. Open up the vendors to spend credits in on hub worlds like Noveria and the like.

The gameplay will probably be awesome but the writing and plot will be typical Bioware Game of Tropes.
When was the last time a Bioware game had a good plot and an engaging open world?
