LG has Announced They Will Announce a 32-Inch 4K HDR Monitor With USB-C at CES

Get on the 4K HDR train with LG's upcoming monitor.

Televisions with 4K HDR capabilities are becoming relatively commonplace, but the monitor world is still catching up. LG's new 32UD99 UHD 4K HDR 32-inch monitor looks to be a great product for those wishing to upgrade to the latest in display technology.

The LG 32UD99 supports the HDR10 standard (no word on Dolby Vision support) which means that buyers will be able to enjoy the vast majority of HDR-compatible media. The monitor uses an IPS panel, and LG claims it can display over 95 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, making it an excellent choice for artists, 3D modelers, and anyone who works with video or photography. The USB Type-C port allows the monitor to charge a connected laptop, stream 4K imagery, and transfer data all with one cord.

The LG 32UD99 also has built-in speakers with LG's Rich Bass technology. Most built-in monitor speakers in my experience don't produce a great sound experience, so I'm eager to see if this monitor is different in that respect. Unfortunately, information about the 32UD99's refresh rate and its support of adaptive sync is not available as of this time.

No price point has been announced for the LG 32UD99 (which needs a cooler name). LG will be officially unveiling and announcing the monitor at CES which takes place January 5-8 in Las Vegas.

Ok Jason, it's awesome we're seeing more tech articles, and that sort of content is a really good for this website's audience.

But when you're talking about monitors on shacknews, there are a couple pieces of info you have to include:

      1) What's the max refresh rate?
      2) Does it support adaptive sync (Freesync/Gsync) and at what range?

This stuff is of utmost importance to somebody using a monitor for PC games. It's also important to know when they have Lightboost/strobing technology.

        December 14, 2016 11:49 AM

Maybe that info isn't available yet?

Probably, but he should definitely say if that's the case. Like, there should be check box "Have I talked about adaptive sync and max refresh rate?" before submitting any monitor article.

Basically, I think it's a cool monitor, but now I have google to find two of the most important bits of info. It would be way better if the article save me and other readers the trouble.

I think it's wrong. You're spending a lot of processing power on real-estate you're not looking at for most games.

Ultrawide is incredible at providing additional immersion, best thing to happen to standard PC gaming since widescreens took off a decade ago. I don't know what 4k is bringing to the equation aside from a higher pixel density & sharper image and very demanding performance requirements on current games.

I think the highest refresh rate for 4k available right now is 75hz. Which is great, but I don't know if we're close to manufacturers going for 120hz or not.

Naw, Vizio has a bunch of 4K units that do 120 Hz.

Is it real though? I'm not aware of any TV you can connect to a PC and get a 120hz refresh rate. They're all just 60hz with interpolation.

              December 14, 2016 12:57 PM

It's real. A bunch of high end Sony/Samsung/LG TVs support 120Hz inputs as well.

Many tvs new and oldish are true 120hz, with 240hz using the software interpolation. With HDMI 2.0, you can now input and display a 120hz signal.

Hmm. Just looked it up. Marketing mumbo jumbo clouds the issue. Seems as if you're right.

Looks like they do 60Hz with 4K inputs OR 120Hz with 1080 inputs.

I thought it was a bandwidth limitation of DP 1.2, which DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 already address.

The Vizio sets take a 4K/60Hz input and display BACK in 120Hz. There isn't a set on the market that takes a 4K/120Hz input and displays back in 4K/120Hz.

You'll need at least two 1080 GTX GPUs to power that.

I'm hoping that I can render at 1080 and get perfect scaling to 4K for cases where I can't get high frame-rates at 4K.

          December 14, 2016 1:06 PM

That's what GPU scaling is for. We can return to the days of CRT where you can mix and match a resolution and refresh rate for the desired level of details/effects.
