Microsoft chalked up wins in July, August, and September, but it remains to be seen how the imminent release of PS4 Pro will shake up sales.

Citing data release from NPD Group, Microsoft announced that Xbox One outsold PS4 during the month of September (via GameSpot).

Not only did its console top sales charts in the United States, Xbox One hit best-seller status in the United Kingdom as well.

Xbox One has now outsold PS4 for the third month in a row, and Microsoft overcame impressive odds to earn its bragging rights. PS4 dominated Xbox One in sales from November 2014, one year after both systems launched, until July 2016. Moreover, Sony launched its $300 PS4 Slim last month, but those savings weren't enough to win consumers over.

Next month, the landscape of this console generation changes. On November 10, Sony launches its PlayStation 4 Pro, a $400 hardware upgrade that boasts 4K scaling for games and digital media. Microsoft's "Scorpio" upgrade for Xbox One isn't due until sometime in 2017, but the manufacturer is already confident that its better box will put Sony's to shame.
