CD Projekt Red is worth $1 billion

That's a lot of Witcher 3 sales.

13

Disclosing its financial report for the first half of 2016, CD Projekt Red reported a market capitalization of over 3.92 billion zloty, or $1.341 USD (via Gamasutra).

"The Group’s sales revenues and net financial result were dominated by continuing high sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and by the global release of the game’s second expansion – Blood and Wine," the company said.

Geralt of Rivia carried CDP to financial glory, but has closed the loop on The Witcher 3 and the series as a whole. Fortunately, the forthcoming Game of the Year Edition should put a few more bucks in company coffers; and besides, CDP has plenty of ideas for how to stay profitable between now and the release of Cyberpunk 2077, its next blockbuster title.

Namely, CDP wants to integrate online services for games like Gwent for online features like cross-platform support, and distribute its games in China through Chinese publisher GAEA. Those talks have already begun.

Awesome. I felt guilty buying Witcher 3 on sale for $30 for how awesome the game is, glad it's been a financial success!

How much of that billion is GOG's value? 50%? 70%? Or is GOG's value separate because it's a wholly owned subsidiary.

I'd assume GOG is factored into that and was probably the bulk of it. No way they'd be worth a billion if it was just the studio.

CD Projekt S.A. holds both Red and GOG and the reported financials are consolidated. GOG's revenue year to date is ~20% of the total, and its profits are ~4%.

Will be interesting to see if CDPR will be able to walk away from Geralt and the Witcher in light of the last game...

If Cyberpunk 2077 isn't a blockbuster, they may find themselves crawling back...

Which I would be totally fine with.

Not really, if Bethesda did the next Witcher game it would probably be a steaming pile of shit. Geralt is a cool character, but crafting an engrossing story requires talent.

Based on the rumors of Cyberpunk 2077 going full-on GTA (with physics based vehicle and robot modeling!), I'll be shocked if we don't see a huge improvement in the combat loop of the gameplay. Sounds like they really want to make a bonkers sci-fi action game on top of their strong RPG foundation.

We need more companies like CD Projekt Red, that clearly take pride in the work they produce and are capable of putting out stellar content. It seems like the larger and more successful a company gets, the more they run in the opposite direction from these two tenets... I'm glad CDPR is hitting it out of the park.
