Report: A revised DualShock 4 will ship with slimmer PS4
Findings point to a PS4 'Slim' being developed alongside PS4 'Neo.'
Backing up a recent report that Sony plans to unveil a sleeker PS4 in addition to its long-rumored Neo hardware upgrade, Twitter user shortmaneighty2 posted photos of a revised DualShock 4 controller that will ship with PS4 "Slim" (via Polygon).
Take a gander at the photo (courtesy of shortmaneighty2) and you'll notice that the light bar resides on the front of the controller, above the touchpad.
If you missed the hubbub over the PS4 "Slim" leak, shortmaneighty2 scored the console from a Gumtree auction—thank eBay, but for the UK. Eurogamer was among the first outlets to publish the report; being based in the UK, the outlet sent one of its editors to the buyer's house and confirmed the slimmer PS4's existence.
Sony could be gearing up to officially reveal the slim PS4 and its Neo upgrade to standard PS4 hardware at next month's PlayStation Meeting.

So I guess consoles are going to start following the smart phone example and release a mid-life "S" model? It actually makes some kind of sense if they improve the hardware too (not just making it thinner), but only if they make the base models upgradable so it doesn't start fragmenting the players.

Well, the history is more nuanced than "start following the smart phone" model. Even the NES and SNES got official redesigns. But outside of Sega's infamous 32x and SegaCD (the latter of which also got a redesign), performance upgrades were not really a thing.
So when you say "mid-life S model," I think of the iPhone S releases which did improve the performance with upgraded internals.
That both MSFT and SNE are throwing in big with the performance upgrade concept is pretty new. -
