Mario makes an appearance at Rio Olympics closing ceremonies

Rio hands off the 2020 Olympics to Tokyo, Japan.

As is tradition at the Olympics, when one country finishes hosting, the closing ceremonies offer a passing of the torch so to speak to the next country to host. And in this case, Mario was on hand to accept for Tokyo Japan in 2020 from current Brazilian host Rio de Janiero.

In as classic presentation highlighting the various athletes and sports the country will offer, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was seen running late to catch his flight to Rio, lamenting that he would not make it in time. So what better way to highlight Japanese prowess in games than to have the PM transform into Mario for a little pipe run from Tokyo to Rio.

The presentation was really good and probably gave gamers around the world a bit of a chill. Well done, Japan. See you in four years.

That presentation was pretty awesome. The 2020 Olympics are going to be so weird and fascinating. I also expect Japan will be kicking some serious ass. Brazil upped their medal haul by a bit, but when Japan gets going they will really get going.

Agreed, I expect them to come in 3rd or 4th overall in 2020.

It takes 10+ years to really change medal counts. China showcased this.

Even if Japan gets the 30% home games bump that is typical, and Brazil came no where close to doing, they won't be in the top 5.
