OPENING CEREMONY AND UPPER BRACKET QUARTERFINALS

The broadcast stream will go live with The International Opening Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. PDT, to be followed by top-seeded OG’s best-of-three Upper Bracket series against MVP Phoenix. Next up, DC will take on Wings in the other best-of-three UB Quarterfinals series of the day. The losing teams will drop into the Lower Bracket to play again on Tuesday, while the winners will earn a day of rest before playing their Upper Bracket Semifinals matchups on Wednesday.

LOWER BRACKET BEST-OF-ONE ELIMINATION ROUND

While all four of Monday’s Upper Bracket teams have some breathing room, the Lower Bracket teams face much harsher prospects in the games that follow. TNC vs VGR; Secret vs LGD; Fnatic vs Escape; Na’Vi vs Liquid. Half of these teams will play only a single match on the Main Stage of The International 2016. Facing off in best-of-one matchups, these teams are playing for their tournament lives. Stay tuned after the conclusion of the Upper Bracket matches to see which Lower Bracket teams can keep their hopes alive.

The entire UI you see now is the oldest and most archaic part of Dota 2. It hasn't been updated in years. It's one of the things I really hate about it at the moment. The entire in-game UI needs a rehaul. Especially the picking phase screen.

I'm so glad they lost after how they screwed over Misery and W33.

RTZ is well on his way to becoming the Idra of DOTA - plenty of skill but a cancer when it comes to actually winning major events.

am I being unfair to idra?

        • reply
          August 8, 2016 8:33 PM

RTZ isn't actually the problem this time around. Right now EE is Puppey are easily the worst aspects of Secret. Specifically Puppey, he doesn't pay attention to the shifting metas. At least it seems like he doesn't give a shit anymore. And gets by drafting cheese strats.

His hero pool has gotten smaller and less dynamic since he started Secret too.

          • reply
            August 8, 2016 8:57 PM

Peehaps in this tournament but RTZ has a significant number of failures relative to the people he is playing with. EE won big without him, Puppey won big without him, so did EG and Secret. Just 4 months ago, Puppey and EE did just fine with Misery and W33.

Maybe it's the meta. But maybe it's a farm first mid who gets caught out at TI6 by a Jugg spin after the first creep wave.

            • reply
              August 8, 2016 8:58 PM

RTZ plays whats given to him and throughout the tourney he performed well. Way better than anyone else on the team. EE and Puppey are anchors for this team right now.

              • reply
                August 8, 2016 9:13 PM

Puppey and EE won a Major in March - you can't say these guys are old and washed up. The problem is that Puppey decided he wanted a 9k MMR pub star and ditched 2 super dynamic players for a guy who always looks good and never wins.

Of course RTZ performed well, he has great mechanics and gets the heroes he wants, but that's not the same as winning. The good thing about DOTA is that you have plenty of big events (DAC, Starladder, Majors, TI) to measure a players impact on team performance - bad news is that RTZ's teams perform worse year after year.

This is the lower bracket, whoever wins in here secures a second chance to climb back. Lots of reasons, constant meta changes, newer blood in the scene, some players adapting to the new patches and some aren't. This game is constantly changed between every 3-6 months.

      • reply
        August 8, 2016 9:07 PM

There are lots of reasons, but for the most part the teams are completely different. None of the teams have the same players from last years TI. Rosters in dota are incredibly unstable.

The majors have changed things a little, but EG and Secret felt the need to shift their rosters still so they had to get through regional qualifiers as well.

            • reply
              August 8, 2016 9:14 PM

Yeah the major system seems to have actually made teams less stable when it was setup partially to counteract that. Teams put a lot more stock in the majors outcomes compared to other tournaments and roster changes were common after all the majors. Oddly enough the 4 teams considered the best coming into TI (Wings, Liquid, OG, and Newbee) were the teams that have kept their rosters static the longest.
