Demon's Souls creator says a remake could happen, but under the direction of another studio

Hidetaka Miyazaki appears to be done with both Souls and Bloodborne properties, although he's open to letting other teams work on either/or.

GameSpot editor Eddie Makuch has published an extensive interview with From Software president and Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Among topics such as Dark Souls 3 breaking franchise sales records and future plans for the studio, the "SoulsBorne" creator reiterated that he has no plans to direct a remake of Demon's Souls, although another studio could get the go-ahead from Sony, owner of the property.

"The Dark Souls series is Bandai Namco Entertainment's IP, and Demon's Souls and Bloodborne is Sony Interactive Entertainment's IP. Hence, the decision to do a remake or remastering is under their jurisdiction," he explained.

"For me and for From Software, I don't think we'll be involved with their happening, but it could happen through another developer."

Not only does Miyazaki have little interest in revisiting Demon's Souls, he's been vocal about wanting to make a clean break from the SoulsBorne series. Miyazaki said that Dark Souls 3, released back in April, should be considered the end of his involvement in both Souls and Bloodborne titles.

"Just as it's been announced, we have two DLCs planned [for Dark Souls 3], but as it stands now, I'm not thinking about making any sequels or spin-offs. That applies to Bloodborne as well."

Note, however, that the director is leery of using the word finish in conjunction with either property.

"If someone says they want to make a Dark Souls game using the latest in technology, and if it is sufficiently attractive, then it wouldn’t be fair for me to just finish the series. To add, I can't deny the fact that, maybe down the line, I want to go back to the series and make one more game before I retire. I don't want to be branded a liar if that happens [laughs]."
