Sega acquires Endless Space developer Amplitude Studios
Its PC strategy portfolio just got a bit stronger.
Developer Amplitude Studios has become rather well known for its turn-based strategy "Endless" series of games. Publisher Sega is hoping to create an Endless Summer for its PC strategy portfolio with today's acquisition of the independent company.
“Joining the SEGA family represents the culmination of five years of hard work from myself and Romain and everyone here at Amplitude Studios," co-founder Mathieu Girard said. "For the Endless series to be alongside PC franchises with such heritage as Total War and Dawn of War in the SEGA Europe stable puts our games where we feel they deserve to be. We look forward to leveraging SEGA Europe’s expertise in the PC market to take the Endless series to the next level.”
Sega will now publish Endless Space 2, and takes over Endless Space, Endless Legend, and Dungeon of the Endless. Amplitude joins an already impressive list of PC strategy developers under Sega's umbrella, including Creative Assembly, Relic Entertainment and Sports Interactive.
Co-founder Romain de Waubert de Genlis said in a blog post on the Amplitude site that he and Girard were huge fans of Creative Assembly and Relic, making the decision to join Sega easy. "The opportunity to join them is incredible for us, a real dream come true," he said. "But the bigger reason why we wanted to join SEGA was how they treat their internal studios. Often, studios are controlled by a central department that dictates what games they should do, and how and when. But SEGA is a company that offers its support to the creators, positioning itself as a service provider, helping studios to reach their goals with only one objective in mind: Quality!"
A version of Endless Space 2 was scheduled to come to Early Access on Steam later this year, but that will likely not happen now. A Sega release in Japanese had Endless Space 2 slated for sometime in 2017, but the English version just has the game listed as currently in development. The game was shown off at GamesCom last year.
