Destiny now has nearly 30 million registered players, Activision says

Latest update apparently 'reengaged' the community

Destiny has had its ups and down since its launch, and developer Bungie even sent out a questionnaire in February asking if fans were having fun. Activision is putting a postive spin on the game for investors, reporting that it now has almost 30 million registered users, although how many of those are active, the company isn't saying.

"We think engagement has remained remarkably strong, even after the release of some competitive games in this genre," said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg in an investor conference call yesterday. "But it's clear that our fans are hungry for more content than we've been able to create and that passion and loyalty from our fans is something that we don't take for granted, which is why we're working side-by-side with Bungie to make sure that in the future, we're able to deliver a more consistent stream of great content and drive even more engagement."

COO Thomas Tippl said users are averaging more the 100 hours of play time, and the April update provided "strong reengagement," while Hirshberg said the update was "very well received" by fans.  Activision is planning an another expansion for the game later this year, and a sequel is already in the works for 2017. The first expansion, The Taken King, launched in September.

Ya, that's the kicker though, isn't it. Just like with FB. They used to tout how many accounts they had, but not "people". I knew many people that had alt accounts because of the stupid flash games that required you to have FB friend do things in the game for you to advance. Not quite the same thing here, but still corporations trying to pump themselves up.

yeah, 'had' 30 million registered players might be more accurate

No, they're still registered. There aren't many ways to 'un'-register an account; unless you minus out bans.

FB reports their daily and monthly active users all the time

I didn't say it, but I was thinking pre-IPO when they were rather selective on the number they reported. And, are you sure it's "users" and not accounts? One user can have multiple accounts.

well pre IPO they have no obligation to report those things publicly. You can be sure they were reporting it to their investors. And yes, it's users, not accounts. 1.6 billion monthly active users.

that's the exact opposite of what you're complaining about. They're being very precise about trying to report on the fact and its exact impact.

and all this of course supports the criticism about Destiny. If they had good active user numbers they'd be crowing about those instead of registered users

That's like the Mormon church saying they have 15 million members

      30m register players.

Let's have the stat how many have the Taken King expansion bet that like 2-5m?

And then we can talk active players. Maybe 100k.

The reason they don't release active numbers is because they don't make money based off of that. The only numbers that matter to them is the "potential" user base of future expansions/sequels, and what their monthly revenue is for their ingame store.

Knowing active users is only important to gamers who love to bitch. It would be justified if there was a subscription required to play.
