Watch in-game footage of Sword Art Online: The Beginning
Kirito and Asuna would be happy with the first-ever VR version of Sword Art Online.
We finally caught a glimpse of players taking part in Sword Art Online: The Beginning, and today, we’re seeing how the project looks from the player’s perspective.
The video shows in-engine footage of what the player sees while wearing the VR headset. As you could imagine, the action looks extremely basic considering this is just a demo to show off how IBM’s technology could bring the world of Sword Art Online to life.
The character models, weapons, and special effects all look like they took a page from early MMORPGs, like EverQuest, while the action is nowhere near what fans of the series would expect. There are no backflips, no combos, and no special moves as we can see the player can take swings at their enemy in order to attack.
While fans of Sword Art Online envisioned a completely different experience, you should remember VR gaming is still in its infancy and has yet to be made available to consumers. While the footage below looks extremely raw and uninviting, we still think this is a concept that developers will want to participate to create their own VR-focused Sword Art Online game.
