Heroes of the Storm raises the dead with Xul tomorrow

Bring out your dead! Xul is bringing his command of the deceased to Heroes of the Storm tomorrow.

The wait for the latest Heroes of the Storm Specialist is nearly over. Blizzard is ready to unleash Xul, the Diablo necromancer, onto the Nexus tomorrow.

Blizzard went into detail on Xul's capabilities last week. This Specialist character can take advantage of his command over the dead to power himself up and even recruit a few allies. He even has a fourth ability that uses Bone Armor to protect him, with one of three unique affects attached.

Need a reminder of what Xul can do? Let's watch that video one more time.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

The worst part about Li Ming is that shes been nerfed.

Whole reason why I didn't get too attached to her at first. (see what I did there). Knew the nerf stick was coming.

Yeah, kinda. I still prefer KT since he can nuke a single selected target, vs LM's attack are LOS. Even her beam is LOS, but it'll go through everyone. Except, it's weak vs a single target. I'd rather nuke the single target and take him out. But it is kinda situational. If there's 3 heroes clustered, I'll use his aoe attack instead if I don't already have the bomb spreading ability.

I'm interested to see if he can compete with Zagara for the typical "one specialist per team" slot.

Also, his level 20 Q talent (enemies hit by spectral scythe receive 75% reduced healing for 4 seconds) looks like a must pick talent and, if played right, can seriously fuck with Rehgar's ult.

Unless he's made out of paper I think he'll see play in the competitive scene, and that tends to dictate what people consider "viable" in Hero League.

The "one specialist per team" thing is complete BS, though, and is the result of bad HotS players trying to shoehorn a role-based meta (from LoL/WoW) into a game where it doesn't belong.

I think the fairly typical 1-2 tank, 1-2 heal, 2-3 assassins, 0-1 specialists is just a result of that particular comp being fairly easy to play and understand. Multiple specialists can be very strong but it seems like it requires an additional amount of finesse compared to just facerolling into a teamfight.

I played a HL match last night with lost vikings on my team and we lost horribly because we couldn't capitalize on their particular advantage. I told everyone "hey let vikings soak while the rest of us run around as a group and gank." They agreed, and then we just never got kills (and died ourselves). I can't tell you if the Vikings were a bad player or someone else was, but I believe we would have been better served with a Valla/Raynor/whoever instead of TLV.

TLV, Murky, Gazlowe and Abathur are the weird specialists that require the rest of the team to play differently (or be played by an exceptional player) to really succeed.

Zagara, Sylvanas, and Nazeebo are essentially sustained damage with kits that interact with the map in slightly different ways. For Zagara and Nazeebo that means summons, and for Sylvanas that means a minion/structure disable.

Azmodan can be in either group. His Q build fits more into group 1 (requires solid rotations with 1-2 people to weaken but not kill minions) and that turns him into a late-game burst mage, while his other builds fit more the sustained damage category.

Based on his kit Xul appears to be solidly in the later group.

The "typical" comp really is just the result of LoL/WoW people wanting something simple to understand, which isn't the game at all.
