Super Mario Galaxy for Wii U rated by ESRB
Could we be seeing a holiday release of Super Mario Galaxy on Wii U?
When Nintendo launched the ability to purchase Wii games on the Wii U eShop, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was among one of the first games to become available for sale. While the sequel to the popular Super Mario Galaxy game was a great start, having the original available is something we’re sure many Nintendo fans have been secretly hoping for. Today, we’re learning we’re one step closer to that fantasy of becoming reality as Super Mario Galaxy has just been rated by the ESRB for the Wii U.
Japan has been able to purchase Super Mario Galaxy from the Wii U eShop since May 2015, although western territories have yet to get the game on their respective eShop. Hopefully this Wii U rating on the ESRB means we’re close to getting Super Mario Galaxy in the west, and what better time to get it than right around the holidays?

You're right. This would be for those Wii U owners who may not have played it when it originally released, sold their physical copy years ago, can't find it, or just want a digital version so they don't have to leave their cozy couch to play.
IIRC, Wii releases on Wii U are the original versions. No enhancements or anything.

Does the Wii U even upscale? I think it's just a release like the existing SMG2 for the Wii U:
