TGS 2015: Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue updates Dream Drop Distance and more

There's one more piece of the Kingdom Hearts puzzle to remaster before Kingdom Hearts 3 and it's coming next year.

Square Enix took the stage during Sony's Tokyo Game Show presentation to reveal information on a handful of games, including one of the final pieces of the Kingdom Hearts puzzle to require an HD update. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue will come with, among other games, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, which is only appropriate, since this is the game that officially leads into Kingdom Hearts 3.

Dream Drop Distance originally released on Nintendo 3DS in 2012. For those that don't remember this story, it officially takes place after the events of Kingdom Hearts 2 and is pretty much the most recent chapter of the series, with the game's ending leading directly into what should be Kingdom Hearts 3.

Other games set to be included are Kingdom Hearts X [Chi] Back Cover, which expands on the narrative of the mobile games. While that sounds inconsequential, the story will have a grander impact on the KH narrative as a whole. Then there's the interesting Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage-, which looks to tell the ongoing story of Aqua. Recall that Aqua found herself in a bad situation at the end of Birth by Sleep. But this story not only looks to follow up on that, but it'll also take place after the events of Dream Drop Distance, which could lead into the Birth by Sleep cast finally crossing paths with Sora and crew.

Kingdom Hearts is never short on questions, so 2.8 HD will look to raise them all once more. There is no release date for this compilation, but it'll most likely come next year. That should also fuel concerns that Kingdom Hearts 3 is nowhere close to ready, so don't be surprised if that game doesn't make it to 2016 at all.

Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
