Halo 5: Guardians opening cinematic introduces Spartan Locke's team

Microsoft and 343 Industries ended PAX Prime in a big way by releasing one of the opening cinematics for Halo 5: Guardians, introducing Spartan Locke's Red team of soldiers.

As promised earlier today, Microsoft Gaming Studios and 343 Industries had some more to reveal about Halo 5: Guardians. That something came at the end of PAX Prime, in the form of the game's opening cinematic, which can be seen below.

BuzzFeed Tech was the first to get its hands on the latest Halo 5: Guardians video. This video introduces players to Fire Team Osiris, Spartan Locke's team of soldiers. That, of course, includes Halo 3: ODST's Buck, complete with CGI Nathan Fillion. The crew is sent on a mission to retrieve a high-value target that's currently in Covenant custody. That segues into a freefalling sequence, followed by footage of a firefight against Covenant forces.

This serves as an introduction to Spartan Locke's story, but series star Master Chief is conspicuous by his absence. His story is clearly forthcoming, so stay tuned in the coming weeks to learn more. Halo 5: Guardians is set to release on Xbox One on October 27.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

That looks like a scene from a movie I would hate because it looks too much like a video game.

...and you will never get to do anything closely related to that at any point in the game.

I'm confused. Wasn't Fillion's character ODST and not Spartan?

Yes, so was the female Spartan introduced from the last game.

Spartan program is not as hard to get into now. Actually each successive version of the program improved compatibility with recruits for the enhancements. Master Chief is a Spartan II, the ones in Reach are III's (except for Jorge), and the ones in Halo 4 are version IV. Spartan Locke was just an ONI agent prior to this game. Some theories pointed out that Sergeant Major Johnson was part of Spartan I at some point.

Good to see Buck made it to the end of the Covenant War.
