Xbox One DVR feature requires external hard drive to function

Microsoft has revealed the upcoming Xbox One DVR feature won't work unless the user has an external hard drive connected to the console.

During its Gamescom presentation, Microsoft announced its Xbox One will have a new feature that will allow it to record over-the-air TV, essentially turning the console into a makeshift DVR. Unfortunately, we’re learning about some stipulations regarding this feature.

According to project lead Richard Irving, the DVR functionality won’t be able to record to the Xbox One’s internal hard drive. "You need an external hard-drive specifically for DVR because we want to keep the [storage] paths optimized between playing games and watching TV," Irving said during a presentation on the Xbox One’s upcoming Dashboard redesign. "We don't want them to interact with each other."

While we can understand wanting to keep storage paths optimized, we wonder what will happen to external storages that have games installed on them as well? Will the games not run as well if the user decides to also use it for DVR functionality? Either way, it’s a shame to have to require those who want to record over-the-air broadcasts to have to spend more money for an external hard drive when the Xbox One already has internal storage.
