The fight for the future is about to begin, as four players enter the whacked-out distant future... of 1999. That's the premise for Capsule Force, a new anime-inspired, arcade-style multiplayer game from developers Klobit and Iron Galaxy. And the battle for the future is about to begin later this month.

Players on a 2D plane must compete for all-powerful capsules in 2v2 team-based warfare. The idea is to obliterate the opposing team and ride the tram to the next screen. The battle will continue until one team grabs the capsule and declares victory. While players can shred one another with energy beams and other futuristic weaponry, each stage will have its own set of environmental traps to watch out for. Solo players can also jump in and play through a full 30-mission single-player campaign.

For an idea of what to expect, the two-person team at Klobit has gone the full mile and created a throwback 80s VHS-style trailer that can be seen below. Capsule Force hits PC and PlayStation 4 on July 23.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
