Minecraft developer scraps its collectible-card game, Scrolls

Mojang's Scrolls is being scrapped, although the studio is allowing at least one more year of play for fans of the game.

Mojang has announced it will cease development for Scrolls now that its major content patch, called Echoes, has been released.

Scrolls will still be available for purchase once development ends, but its servers will run until “at least” July 1, 2016. All proceeds Mojang receives from those who purchase Scrolls will go towards keeping it playable for as long as possible.

Mojang considers the launch of the Scrolls beta a “great success” as tens of thousands of players battled daily, many of which remain active today. “Unfortunately, the game has reached a point where it can no longer sustain continuous development,” the company says in an update published this week.

Scrolls was officially launched back in December 2014 after being in open beta for several months prior. The game launched on PC, Mac, and Android with an iPad version expected to be released shortly after, but it never saw the light of day. We dabbled in Scrolls when it released and while it did a nice job of combining collectible-card games with strategy games, it wasn’t anywhere near as fun or addictive as games like Hearthstone. It's a shame to see a game like Scrolls get scrapped shortly after release, but if that means more Minecraft updates, then we're all for it.

I liked Minecraft so much that I bought it sight unseen and I don't think I've ever actually played it.

I did the same, however I did play a few games single player. It didn't really grab me, but it was a bit interesting that where you played a card mattered.

I've never played Hearthstone, so I can't compare.

I bought it when it was first made available, and tinkered for a bit. I realized quickly that without a real objective, I've got no creative bones in my body for world-building.

Well thats a damn shame. It was a much better card game than Hearthstone. Way more skill, way more tactics and way more depth. It lacked Hearthstones polish, the familiar franchise and was really hurt by the fact that the games could last a long time.

I think shutting it down is pretty shitty. Sure don't release any more updates but Minecraft money could keep the servers for a card game running for the rest of time.

They are owned my Microsoft now... and somebody put it into a spreadsheet and saw it didn't make as much money as they liked (if at all). Simple as that I'm guessing.
