The Last of Us 2 confirmed by Nolan North

Nolan North made it clear Naughty Dog is working on a sequel to The Last of Us, but will he be able to lend his voice to the upcoming game?

The sequel to Naughty Dog’s 2013 hit, The Last of Us, was inadvertently confirmed by one of the game’s key voice actors, Nolan North.

North attended this year’s MetroCon in Tampa, Florida over the weekend where he held a one-hour discussion on a number of topics, but ultimately, he chatted about The Last of Us, specifically its future. His quote, which we warn contains spoilers for The Last of Us, was “For now, last one I know they’re doing a Last of Us 2, but my character in Last of Us kinda… kinda… untimely demise…”

His statement confirms Naughty Dog is, in fact, working on a sequel to The Last of Us, although it appears North isn’t exactly sure if he’d be taking part in it or not. Considering just how popular The Last of Us was, which received the remastered treatment, got its own PS4 bundle, and a standalone release of its Left Behind DLC, we can’t say we’re completely surprised to hear today’s news. What we would be surprised to hear is if North is able to come back for the game’s sequel.

You can hear North's panel in its entirety below. If you're interested in hearing his thoughts on The Last of Us 2, you can jump ahead to around the 1:06 mark.

How is the PS4 as a media center compared to the XBO? I'm still running an X360 (got it 1yr after launch) and if it dies between now and then, I need to decide which console to get. I rarely use it for games anymore -- it's mainly being used right now as a conduit for Netflix and Amazon streaming -- so it needs to be solid in that respect first and foremost. Otherwise, my 4.5yr old son will kill me.

They just added a media player, and there's a Plex app (though it's in beta, so you need their subscription to use it for now). Otherwise, it's got all the stuff you'd expect in terms of streaming services.

Yeah, the new media player is awesome though. It streams everything I throw at it. It even detects my Plex server and streams from that without needing the official app. It actually works better than the official app because it also streams Channels which I use to watch HG network stuff for the wife and Giant Bomb videos.

It has Netflix and Amazon Prime apps. No issues there. It also recently got a decent media playet that plays standard video file formats including mkv but does not yet support DTS.

It seems fine. Handles bluray better than the XB1.

I do wish the Touchpad interface was ssytem-wide, and the touchpad could be used for Netflix searches. It's a pretty big bummer that it doesn't.

Not bad, Plex on Xbox is better. I like the homescreen for the Xbox as well. I'd give an edge to the Xbox but you are not missing much by going the other way.

I'm not really excited about this. Some games just don't need a sequel. I'm sure it'll be amazing, and I'll love it, but right now I just want to say 'Leave it be, like Big Trouble in Little China.'

Hopefully it's a sequel that simply tells another compelling story in that world. It needn't have anything to do with the characters (or even locations) in the first game.

They built an incredible world, but the stories developed in TLOU were even stronger and more believable. The story those characters played out does not need a sequel, it deserves to stand on it's own.

Additionally, Naughty Dog have proven themselves masters of storytelling and creating believable settings for those stories. I think they are too good to simply push out sequels and creating franchises. I want them to push the boundaries of their creative potential. Sequel-itis stifles this potential.

I would be okay with a totally different setting and characters with a different relationship dynamic. How about a married couple, how often do we see that realistically portrayed in games? Cue many obvious jokes

It felt like the zombie genre was pretty tired when TLOU hit - if not for their quality of work and attention to detail, it would've been very easy for this game to fall in the same unplayed pile with all of the other well-received titles featuring the undead...The Walking Dead, Left 4 Dead, Day Z, ZombiU, Dead Island....

A married couple would be pretty great. Especially if the main was effectively the wife and they brutally killed off the husband halfway through or something. I'm tired of sad dads/husbands/boyfriends.

Exactly, Naughty Dog are one of the few studios who could write that sort of relationship convincingly and in an engrossing manner. You're right about the "sad guy who has lost someone" cliche too.

I understand that the game was successful, but they've already done the 'Let's remaster a game that just came out on last gen not too long ago' thing. I can appreciate that a lot of people didn't have a ps3 and jumped in with ps4, but still-seemed a bit soon to me. And now, not too long after the remaster release we're hearing about a sequel? I don't know. This has nothing to do with the game itself, but when I get that 'Let's get this $$' vibe from a company it poisons my interest.

Kind of agree. They told what they needed to tell, it was perfect for what it was. I especially hope they stay away from the main characters. I understand the obvious need for publishers to make money and Last of Us 2 surely would, but still.

I would be perfectly content if the sequel told a totally different story in the same world.

Agreed, as other day maybe it'll be an entirely different story. That I could get on board with,
