E3 2015: Watch the Bethesda E3 Showcase here
E3 2015 has begun, so join us to see all the major announcements from Bethesda Softworks that center around Fallout 4, Doom, Dishonored 2, and more!
This is it! E3 2015 is underway and with the Nintendo World Championships wrapping up, it's time to shift focus to the folks at Bethesda Softworks.
We know that this is a big show for Bethesda. Fallout 4 has already been announced, Doom is set to make an appearance, Dishonored 2 has apparently been leaked, and we'll more than likely see more information on the upcoming free-to-play multiplayer game Battlecry. Your hosts are Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb, working together for the first time since G4's X-Play went off the air.
The event began at 6:45PM PT/9:45PM ET last night. You can see the full replay of the event in the video below.

Movement speed needs to be doubled. If the gameplay is going to revolve around strafing like the original doom and this video shows then you need movement speed. Otherwise you need new gameplay mechanics like Gears of War cover system. This looks very bland from a gameplay perspective. I've also been playing Brutal Doom all week so this looks slow and dull in comparison.

It's hard not to be wow'd by the graphics and art design. It's clearly an instana-buy if it really looks like that. But I'm not really sold on the gameplay. It's like Brutal Doom at half speed with half the gameplay mechanics at work. Mixed with a tad of Gears of War minus the cover system. Throw in being able to pause the game endlessly as you change weapons. I'm also really confused at how the player is supposed to know/execute some of those moves...feels a bit pre-rendered in that regard. If the hand animations and environment interactions are really that seamless(ripping the guys arm off and using it on the scanner) then I will be fucking blown away.
I'm excited about it but it could of done a lot more for me. Clearly slower/dumbed down for consoles. The snapmat or whatever the mod system is, is very impressive and no doubt took a shit ton of man hours to add but personally I would of gotten a lot more out of it had they simply released advanced tools for PC and let the bad ass modder's have at it. I don't really want to play something created on an XBone. It's great that it's there but I'd much rather play the next great CS or TF mod. Not, little Timmy made infinite ammo and health in a map designed around his school.
It's really not fair to Bethesda that v.20 Brutal Doom is so good.

It's been a major criticism of their games since going full 3D with Morrowind in... 2001?
And they've obviously improved a lot since then but all their models & animations are very lacking compared to other modern games. But like they say, they started work on this directly after Fallout 3, so it makes sense that it's not much better than even Skyrim.
It's unfortunately but it's also the truth. It won't affect most peoples' enjoyment of the game but if that stuff was on point then it would easily be one the best looking games ever.-
You can't build a game at that scale without making tradeoffs. It's just not possible to do everything well. I'm sure BGS knows their animations aren't good, but they don't believe it's a priority.
I've been a fan of their games for a decade now. I really don't give a shit about the animations. Would it be nice if they were on par with other cutting edge titles? Yes, it would be. But I'm willing to accept less in that area if it means we get the biggest more detailed worlds out there.
Same reason I love the Arma series. Bohemia fucking sucks shit at a lot of things, but they also execute on things that no other games even attempt. The overall experience is what matters most to me.-
That's always been the go-to excuse and response, but we know the tools and how the games are made as well as the limitations of their engines. Animations should always be a top priority though, considering all they bring to the experience. They can make or break games, and they are just barely capable enough to not break Bethesda's games.
But now that there is full voice acting for the player characters and an even larger emphasis on third person, as well as a VATS that is no longer a full stop (you can see even the worst animations play out very slowly, yay!), they should really be devoting more to all of that.-
It's the go-to excuse because it makes sense. There's a ridiculous number of characters in any Bethesda game. Creating good looking animations for every action and every dialogue sequence may just be prohibitively expensive. Lifelike animation is a costly and time consuming process. Games with 5 percent of the content of a Fallout or Elder Scrolls title sometimes struggle to make good looking animations.
-
and a bunch of people are increasingly tired that animations fall so low on the priority list when they've seen many large projects do it better and when animations are so important. There's really no need to make apologies for it. It was massively behind the curve 5 years ago. Trying to make claims that it's simply impossible to do a game at this scale with better animations than they have is absurd.
-
Why would you say they are lagging behind in that department, then? I really don't know.
I'd probably lean toward blaming it on the tech, because even extremely talented outsider animators and modders can't really fix or improve what's in there after the fact in all of their previous games. They have hard limitations and can only work within the boundaries they are given.
-
Ridiculous amount of characters, but you can bet the ones doing most of the talking still share the same basic humanoid facial structure. Why can't they come up with a better system for something that will be a major part of the game, such as facial animations and lip-syncing? Valve's work on that stuff in HL2 is still very impressive and is fairly automatic (going by the waveform data initally) with minimal dev input to fix glitches up and make things look better, and it's only improved in the decade since it came out. Very practical if you plan on doing facial animations for a lot of humanoid characters, and they created all of that for a game with only a handful NPCs because something so simple made such a major impact.
The facial animations on display here are super stiff and rough, even compared to other RPGs with massive amounts of characters and dialogue in recent history. The first Mass Effect looks better, and that seemed pretty standard back in 2008 when it came out. They're aping that style of conversation for Fallout 4 but the dialogue presentation and animation is really lacking by comparison and it shows. I can't even bring up The Witcher 2 or 3 because it puts these games to shame.
As for the skeletal animations, there really is no excuse. They have talented animators and artists over there, we know that, but it's not the sheer amount of content that seems to hinder them. If it were, you'd still see a few diamonds in the rough. It's poor across the board, and not because they want it to be or are focused on other aspects.

You don't think The Witcher 3 made any tradeoffs?
It's certainly a big game with pretty animations, but it doesn't have everything that an Elder Scrolls game does. There's no stealth system. The game won't let you murder NPCs outside of scripted cut-scene events. It doesn't have dozens of spells and weapon types. The world isn't fully interconnected. I don't bring these points up to criticize the game, but just to illustrate how including one feature means not including another. Opportunity cost!

People always focus on the most recent releases around awards time. The Witcher 3 will definitely get some recognition, but enough time will have passed where they will be heavily targeting the flaws of earlier games and still swooning over the new shiny stuff, even if most of it is inferior.
It happens with every GOTY.

I was sure they were going to bring that up at some point.
But if they did it now there would be another huge shit storm before the game even came out from the same folks who got them to take it out of Skyrim. I don't know if they'll try it again, but if they do it will likely be shortly before the game launches. They definitely can't do it after the fact again.

Fallout 4 looked INSANE! Here are two videos in case they have not been posted:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWuwLSFmATI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzV1GlDDlv8 * all combat and guns *
YouTube's video quality is ass someone has to make a new service for full quality or 3X - 4x the stream quality. Why doesn't YouTube start charging a monthly charge for users and up the quality, they really need to do this asap.
Anyways Fallout 4 owns.
Doom 4 was cool looks good but man that is a lot of brown would it kill them to use some color, still I want it looks sexy.
I hope there will be some Dishonored 2 gameplay vids rad trailer and hope it will be as detailed as Fallout 4, I wonder if they dumped UE3? and use F4 engine or went to UE4?
Nice start looks like its going to be a awesome E3

Ok DOOM looks INSANE too I just saw the gameplay in this video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2KApp699WdE damn that looks good!
