E3 2015: Overkill's The Walking Dead will run on Starbreeze's new VR headset

A new, unexpected challenger has emerged in the VR wars.

27

Overkill Software will be bringing its The Walking Dead game to E3, but prior to the start of the show, the developer behind the Payday series has announced it will be a VR game. Not only that, but Starbreeze has emerged as an unlikely competitor in the growing VR wars, announcing that it would release its own headset, dubbed Star VR.

Starbreeze made the announcement during a special event at the House of Blues in West Hollywood. The VR headset is an ambitious piece of work, with Starbreeze noting that it would include dual 5K resolution monitors, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 210 degree field of view.

Look for more detailed impressions on Star VR, as well as Overkill's The Walking Dead, to come tomorrow.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

seriously, this is wow, I mean a new competitor that's great. But how could it have remained such a secret for so long and nothing leaked? Crafty, very crafty.

There have been a couple of ultra-wide-FOV VR prototypes that look vaguely similar on youtube.

You definitely can do it, though I'm curious how well they balance it and get the weight down given the size of the hardware.

For one, they've been working with developers for the longest time, with actual devkits available.

If you actually want to play games, where do you think they'll be?

Oculus are practical and trying to deliver something that actually works. Good luck running any game in 90 fps and 5k display.

Damn I would put my money on this VR Starbreeze are awesome devs and that 210 degrees is what VR in my opinion has to be if you want real VR and think your in the game.

This thing sound sick, if they have awesome controls which is really the only thing I am concerned about this could be a winner for sure.

Huh who would of thought, I am very happy right now this is awesome! now that is VR baby.

"dual 5K resolution monitors, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 210 degree field of view" [mic drops]

How can you follow this VR unit, I don't think you can? When you have a awesome dev/company with epic in house engine, good games, good track record, constantly active with new 3D FPS games and games and INSANE HARDWARE.

You could almost speculate and say game over for all the other VRs based on this info. Two questions what is the price for this sucker? and how are their controls?

I am super pumped for this, I guess SLI 980Tis and going to be in massive demand :)

They can't. I'm sure it's a solid prototype, but there's no way they're actually using two 5k panels. They simply couldn't source them right now.

          June 13, 2015 11:05 PM

Yeah that is what I was thinking, just look at the price of a 4k screen(just one), yes its down but 5k would be brutal, price wise.

Man this unit would probably be like 2k a pop, man talk about high end.

I agree with you must be prototype, but man if this is the real specs that is INSANE, I really wonder what the hell the price be for such a crazy unit?'

Who knows we shall see how this pans out, I and super pumped though. Heck if they even where dual 4ks screens that be INSANE could you imagine!

It's two 1440p panels - if you look at the tech spec section of http://www.starvr.com/ that's clear.

Cool thanks. Ok that more reasonable, I just read Shack's article and was like "OMG" when I read 5k.

Well still they have potentially a awesome product, I put my money on them or have high hopes, this is going to be interesting.

Hold on their road map 2014-2015(and we are in 2015) says "•Dual 5.5" Quad HD Panel" though, so why is that there?

                  June 13, 2015 11:29 PM

                  Quad HD means 1440p - 2x 1280x720. So that's accurate.

                    4x, rather - 2x both axes.

I wonder if Facebook just shit them selves? What's that? I think I heard "fuuuuuuccckkkkkkkk"

Of course price is a factor, but still I can't get over this announcement its crazy, I am shocked.

Crazy, I wonder what else is going to happen @ E3 and pre, I almost think Nintendo may show their new system LOL why not lets go full retard ballz deep this year @ E3 2015.

        Wouldn't that be cool.

No, there's no reason to think that. Like I said above there are several VR headset projects that use similar super-wide FOVs; if you want I can link some.

I'm sure Oculus themselves has prototypes internally - it'd be ridiculous to think they don't try stuff like that.

Further, if Oculus decided to release a headset with the same specs I would think they could match or be priced lower. They just have more resources how would a much smaller company have better or cheaper access to LED/LCD tech?

It's just InfinitEye reborn as StarVR. They've been around for a while, there's been some interest from the VR community. But it's always been a small project. high on specs but little on specifics. This is just the first time they've been at E3:

Chill, without info on actual refresh rate (not sure where the editors got 90 Hz from), latency and low persistence, those specs are meaningless.

Way too little information yet to be thinking this way.

This stuff is really hard to make and do it well. I still have more faith in the known talent at Valve and Oculus.

This will flop. First gen VR doesn't need a pixel war. The hardware install base isn't there.
