Street Fighter 5 PS4 exclusivity will keep it off Xbox platforms

It appears the exclusivity Capcom has with Sony for Street Fighter 5 isn't a timed one. Instead, Xbox owners won't be getting their own version of the game at all.

The PlayStation 4 and PC exclusive Street Fighter 5 won’t make its way to the Xbox platform, according to a Capcom representative.

When Street Fighter 5 was announced, many Xbox owners assumed the game would either be a timed exclusive or a future iteration of the game, such as a Super or Ultra Edition, could make its way to the platform. But a Capcom representative has confirmed to GameStop that Street Fighter 5 is “console exclusive for this franchise for this numbered run.”

The Capcom representative admits the partnership with Sony is purely for the benefit of the Street Fighter series. “The relationship serves a gameplay and development purpose, and not just a marketing value,” the rep says. “...  I can say the relationship with Sony does open doors for things we haven’t been able to do in the past.”

It's unfortunate to hear Xbox owners won't be getting their own version of Street Fighter 5, but sometimes in this business, deals like this happen to keep things competitive between the multiple platforms. It recently happened with Rise of the Tomb Raider and will continue to happen as long as developers are wined and dined by console manufacturers. Xbox owners either need to suck it up and buy a PS4, or suddenly be very interested in PC gaming in order to play Street Fighter 5. Or - you know, skip it altogether, but that's crazy talk.

I wish console exclusivity required a disclosure of how much money changed hands for this to happen. Because that line about it being for the benefit is a load of shit considering they're both x86 platforms, and the XB1 isn't so different from WIn10 which it will also release for.

Sony had to have paid millions for this.

Of course Sony paid millions for exclusivity. That's how exclusivity works. But it's a terrible PR move to publicly say that so I don't know why people would expect any company to do so.

Sony is basically financing the game. Capcom should stomp their feet and knit an "I love Sony" sweater.

I'm just glad they're still doing a PC version, or has that changed?

AFAIK SSV is still on PC, and will have cross-platform MP.

Will it be a simultaneous release or lag way behind like the PC versions of 4

I would guess simultaneously since it is cross-platform.

The one bad thing about cross-platform is that it makes it even less likely it will support 120fps.

Consoles are the main platform for fighting games, not PCs. 120fps will never happen, not unless 120hz ever becomes a target for HDTVs (they won't, 4K 60hz is the next step, then who knows after that).

New netcode is said to be GGPO-ish as well.

Why would anyone have to disclose anything? It is a privately funded video game.

SF isnt big like in the 90s. with gaming getting so much variety, the fighting games have fallen quite into a niche. same goes for racing I think and some others I bet that were huge in the 90s

Yeah, the vast majority of those will be exclusive to PS4/Vita, and not because people are shelling out cash for exclusivity.

Depends on your metric. On a mainstream scale, no, I don't think it's going to sell 35+ million copies like a GTA game. However, its competitive scene is arguably bigger now than it's ever been.

Yeah, SF4 is still probably the biggest tournament draw without "Smash" in the name. It's certainly the most regularly seen. Though strangely, MKX is still picking up steam.
Poor MvC3. I think it's finally out of fashion.

I like how the PC is the bastard platform that doesn't really get considered when these deals go down! I think we're in a good place right now where PC games are profitable enough for publishers to be worth while, but not dominating the market so we don't get screwed in deals like this.
