NBA 2K16 will get an original story from director Spike Lee

The NBA 2K series doesn't often dive into story, but NBA 2K16 will be one of the few exceptions, with an original story crafted by filmmaker Spike Lee.

The NBA 2K franchise isn't often known for its narrative chops. However, whenever 2K Sports does dabble in this area, it tends to be pretty effective. So in addition to the standard basketball gameplay and usual year-to-year improvements, 2K and Visual Concepts will also add a focus on narrative with this year's NBA 2K16. And they have just the man for the job.

According to ESPN, acclaimed filmmaker (and notorious New York Knicks fan) Spike Lee has been tapped to write the story for NBA 2K16. The story will center around a player named Frequency Vibrations and focus on the full life of a basketball player, which includes both on and off-the-court drama.

"It's about the trials and tribulations of life on a big stage with the money, fame, temptations, family members, the press, fans, all that stuff," Lee told ESPN.

While the story will look to have the Spike Lee grittiness found in films like Do the Right Thing, Visual Concepts vice president of sports development Jeff Thomas does note that the game will stay within the paramters of an E-rated game. NBA 2K16 is set to release in October, with an early release promised to those that pre-order.

Update: And now there's a trailer! Check it out!

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

you begin as a rough and tumble african american youngster from the streets in a Spike Lee Joint, Do the Right Thing. Your father goes to prison but is let out to help persuade you to go to a certain school to play basketball, in a Spike Lee Joint, He Got Game. You then play NBA 2K16, win everything but the fame, money, and hos aren't worth it, and you become Malcolm X, in a Spike Lee Joint, Malcolm X.

Sounds like it could be cool. I liked the little bit of off court stuff they already had in the player career thing

I just fixed the typo I had in the story. As interesting as it would be if Spike Lee wrote the full life story of a basketball, I don't think that's what that was supposed to be.

Idk I really think this could be pretty awesome. I'm just baffled by the fact that 2ksports does expensive stuff like this when 1) I doubt it'll sell many additional units 2) most people who buy the game probably wont even play that mode

whatever though I enjoy this stuff. I think the biggest detriment will be that they're aiming for an E rating.

The career mode is by far the most popular mode in the game

Malcolm X is fantastic. It's probably my favorite one. I'm sure people here will recommend Do The Right Thing, but I've never seen it.

Also, now's as good a time as any to point out that I absolutely loved the Mike Tyson documentary he did for HBO a few years ago called Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth.

I've gradually come to the opinion that Spike's most meaningful film is BAMBOOZLED. Do The Right Thing is probably his best. I quite liked Inside Man, but it doesn't feel at all like a Spike Lee Joint.
Get On The Bus is good for more Ossie Davis than you can shake a stick at.
He Got Game is an INCREDIBLE Public Enemy Soundtrack album, but a mediocre film, even with Denzel. Ray Allen's acting is comparable to his current NBA performance.

Inside Man is a super entertaining movie, but also very atypical for Spike Lee. I'd recommend it to anyone regardless.

I hope it's about a MVP-caliber player who tears his ACL or something and has to constantly go back to the locker room to be checked out and have MRIs taken as the game goes on without him.
