[Update: Shortly after its launch, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has reached its first tier of funding at $500,000. Considering its current momentum, we would not be surprised if it reached its legendary David Hayter goal of $850,000 later this week.]

Koji Igarashi, best known for his work on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, has announced he’ll be returning to game development as his next project, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, has just launched on Kickstarter.

Igarashi-san is looking to raise $500,000 in order to help cover development costs for Bloostained, which he says has already raised some funds prior to launching on Kickstarter. The money raised on Kickstarter would help increase the overall product budget. As with most Kickstarter campaigns, backers can receive a digital copy of the game for spending at least $28, while a special backer-edition physical copy will be available at $60 or more.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is in development for the PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It’s being categorized as a 2.5D “Igavania” and is described as an exploration-focused, side-scrolling platformer featuring RPG and crafting elements. Now where have we seen that kind of game before?

Players assume the role of Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist curse which slowly crystallizes her skin. Miriam must battle her way through a demon-filled castle summoned by Gebel, who is an old friend who appears to have had the same run-in with an alchemist as his body has become more crystal than flesh.

Igarashi-san has detailed some additional goals for his campaign which includes a hardcover artbook, a second playable character, a Nightmare difficulty mode, and getting David Hayter to become a part of the project to lend his voice to Gebel.
