Microsoft has released the Xbox One’s May system update today, which includes improvements to Party Chat, supporting Voice Messages, and more.

Xbox One preview members were able to get a taste of hose dedicated servers in party chat would work back in March. Over the coming weeks, everyone else will get a crack at this long-awaited feature that will allow Xbox One owners the ability to solve NAT traversal issues that prevented some users from being able to use party chat.

Voice messages will be making its triumphant return to the Xbox platform as users will now be able to send them on the Xbox One. Users will be able to record audio to send to their friends or others through the snapped Messages app, which can be accessed simply by double tapping the Xbox button on the Xbox One controller. Voice messages will be cross console-generation compatible, meaning you’ll be able to send messages to users on either Xbox One or Xbox 360.

This month’s update also supports powering the Xbox One directly from SmartGlass. Users only need to tap on the Connect button on the app to then select if they want to power it on or off, as long as the app is connected within the same network. Speaking of power, Microsoft has also altered the initial setup of the Xbox One to make it easier to select which power mode users would like to select. Instant-on allows the Xbox One to receive background updates to the console, game, and apps as well as use the “Xbox on” voice command, while energy-saving mode is a low power state that requires the user to press the Xbox button the the console to start it up.
