New third-gen PlayStation Vita may include HDMI port

According to a recently leaked trademark filing, a new PlayStation Vita is in the works and may include an HDMI port.

A new PlayStation Vita model could be coming soon as a trademark for a new version of Sony’s handheld has been filed in Japan.

The trademark was leaked on Twitter earlier today and appears to look very similar to the 2000 model, which was introduced in 2013. One major difference appears to be an HDMI port will now be available on the Vita, which could potentially do away with the PlayStation TV now that the handheld could be connected directly to the user’s TV.

The trademark also notes the new Vita is being described as a portable LCD screen game machine controller, which means the original’s OLED display won’t be making a return in this new handheld.

Would you purchase a new Vita if it featured an HDMI port to allow for big-screen play when you’re not traveling? The addition of an HDMI port would be a great addition to the Vita, although we don’t know if that alone would qualify for another $200 out of our pockets.

I would like to see more great Vita exclusives first, as a reason to buy this new Vita.

yeah really. i'm interested in the hardware but there seems to be no reason to own it outside of PS4 streaming.

indie games. That's the reason to own a Vita.

And I've actually grown to play and love indie games b/c of the Vita, but that's not really what I want, or why I bought one. Bought mine when stuff like Gravity Rush and KZ Mercenary was coming out...and now all I see on the 'Coming Soon' list of vita games are these weird looking JP titles that make my head spin. I just want to know what I will be playing on my big screen with this new version of the Vita, because it won't be Danganronpa or Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed.

It would be nice if it included R2 and L2 triggers and the sticks could be pushed in (R3 and L3) to better support games streamed to it from a PS4.

I can't believe Sony doesn't just give up. What a lame system. :/

Pretty sad, huh? I so wanted it to be good. It had such potential. 3DS is just so much better, all because of the games.

I did too. I bought one hoping it'd spur more development, but didn't happen.

I'm enjoying my new 3DS XL though, so thanks! :D

what do you play on your 3DS XL? last game i bought was majora's mask but haven't started it yet since i'm still trying to beat Grim Fandango on vita and also have hotline miami 2, titan souls and eventually axiom verge when it comes out. I'd also rather play Shovel Knight on vita's nicer screen than on 3DS' so I waited. Those games are all out on other platforms but all of those games are so lo-fi it feels like a waste to use up my rare console/TV time to those instead of a AAA.

i'd consider upgrading from my original if they included bumper and triggers for better remote play.

Sony is doing strange things. Still pushing hardware revisions while the software languishes.

Also, the (current) Vita sucks to use the joysticks. Too low on the system, can't grip and comfortably use the sticks. Pls fix kthx.

I'd be way more interested if they dumped the proprietary memory card. Fat chance of that though.

I need a lot more than just an HDMI port if Sony is going to dupe me into buying a Vita again. I need TRIGGER BUTTONS, ANALOG STICK BUTTONS, and REMOVAL OF THE USELESS BACK TOUCH. I could care less about the OLED display. In otherwords, I want Sony to finally make a handheld that at least measures up control-wise to the DualShock 3/4, meaning that I want a direct control analogue to the experience I get on the home consoles, otherwise I'm not interested.

Last year I became convinced Sony was giving up on the Vita and traded it away towards a PS TV to allow me access to the Vita, PSP and PSOne classic games I already own and the ability to play them with a REAL CONTROLLER on a display at home. PS4 Remote Play over a wired connection was a welcome and surprising plus, and the recent button config options via the new accessiblity options were a brilliant update. But even then the PS TV/Vita has fallen far short of what the platform could be, and features are being stripped away as the platform slowly dies. Soon the Vita will only be good for Remote Playing PS4 titles, so if that is the handheld's fate, Sony should at least make the next (and likely last) revision of the Vita a version that properly emulates the DS4 instead of the gimmicky and inadequate incarnation that exists right now.

I want to buy a vita, but the games just don't interest me.
