Shack's Arcade Corner - Metal Slug

There were classic side-scrolling shooters throughout the 80s and 90s, but few were as good as Metal Slug. Join Greg as he takes a look back in this week's Shack's Arcade Corner.

It's time to pick up your favorite weapon for this week's Shack's Arcade Corner. This week's game is the run-and-gun classic, Metal Slug.

Join our own Greg Burke, as he travels back to 1996 for this arcade staple from SNK Playmore. Metal Slug is one of the best run-and-gun shooters of its day, spawning legions of sequels, remakes, and spin-offs. And why not? It had a large variety of power-ups, vehicles, and was tough as nails. It provided a challenge level that satisfied any 90s kid and it's one that still holds up to this day.

Check out Greg's retrospective below. For more, be sure to subscribe to Shacknews on YouTube.

Metal Slug was always too challenging for me, but I sure do like the art style/animation detail

I like that SNK stuck with 2D while everyone else was doing the awkward transition to 3D. N64 and PS1 stuff from the same time hasn't dated nearly as well IMHO

100% this not many did it but SNK pushed the 16bit color and their old boards hard core with ace art and animation and cool techniques they really where pros. KOF was another example of pushing the old gear for so long and being ace about it.

I always wanted the guys to make a new MS on CPSIII as a dream. They hit up ATOMISWAVE later on with 6 but it was already late in the game I had already ditched my PS2 not sure if it was even for NA.

          Anyways such good times hey.
