Sony abandons The Last Guardian trademark

The saga continues for Team ICO's latest and the latest news is not good.

The dream may be over for those holding out any final hope for Sony's ill-fated The Last Guardian. Sony appears to have abandoned the trademark without any request for an extension.

The detectives at NeoGAF have uncovered the information from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The Last Guardian, which was filed under serial number 85700141, was abandoned earlier today with a current status of "Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued."

Sony had previously filed extensions for the trademark three times. The most recent one came on July 2, 2014, days after Sony reps had literally laughed off cancellation rumors. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean the project is dead and buried. Sony may still file a petition to revive the abandoned trademark within the next two months or they may revive Team ICO's game under a different title altogether. Either way, chalk this up as yet another dramatic chapter in the ongoing Last Guardian saga. Shacknews has reached out to Sony reps for comment.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
