Rockstar asks for patience with Grand Theft Auto 5's PS4, Xbox One release
Rockstar Games asks for players to be patient and understanding during next week's release of Grand Theft Auto 5 on new-gen systems.
Grand Theft Auto 5 will be releasing on new-gen systems next week, and Rockstar is asking for your patience if you plan on picking up the game during its launch as well as your feedback to help make it as smooth as possible.
If you recall, the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online didn’t go according to plan as players experienced a number of issues, which included the inability to connect to a game as players ended up being frozen in the first race or being unable to start a job.
Because of this, Rockstar is being a bit more cautious this time with next week’s release and is asking for players to be vocal if any issues arise. The developer has tested the game “extensively,” although they admit there’s no way several hundred testers can replicate the strain millions of players could cause. So, Rockstar is asking players to be patient and to use their Rockstar Games Support website for any and all technical issues as well as email GTAOnline@rockstargames.com to provide official player feedback.
Rockstar also notes a mandatory Title Update will be made available on Monday that will include some last minutes tweaks and optimizations to prepare GTA 5 for its release.

There is literally no way to fully simulate a live environment.
You can do a lot of things to stress a lot of systems and get a lot of coverage, but 100% is impossible. Blizzard did a completely open, free stress test beta for Diablo 3 and their launch day still had about 10x concurrent users.
You can spin up hundreds of thousands of fake players on EC2 instances and the like but it's still not the same. Certain characteristics are totally different. Huge difference in players spread across the globe with varying internet connections that all the connections coming from a handful of very well connected datacenters.
It might be doable if you make a botnet that has the correct geographic distribution. You still need to account for time of day usage patterns and a bunch of other weird player behaviors but it would at least be a step closer!-

That said you can get pretty damn far! And I feel like any possible issues should have been resolved with the original launch? I mean there's no way this launch will have more peak concurrent or daily users so I'm not sure why their old systems would suddenly fail. Unless they redid a bunch of stuff to make it not suck which means they have a bunch of untested code. So it's definitely a little curious.
