Those looking to go medieval on mystical forces will now get a chance to do so, thanks to Double Fine. The Kickstarter-backed Massive Chalice hit Steam Early Access today, giving non-Kickstarter contributors a chance to try out the game for the first time.

Massive Chalice sees players controlling the Immortal Ruler of the Nation and the various heroes that serve underneath. These heroes take on a powerful foe called the Cadence, whose powers are strong enough to send heroes into permadeath. Massive Chalice features a Bloodline system, which allows players to marry heroes and produce offspring that will carry the fight to future generations. The war will last 300 years, so plan accordingly.

Massive Chalice is currently available at a 25 percent off promotional rate. Check it out on Steam Early Access and watch the trailer below.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

This game is good, I backed it and have played several hours now. Reminds me of modern XCOM, in combat and simplicity, but the out-of-combat time spanning thing is a great addition.

It feels like an early access title so avoid for a while if you want a balanced polished game, but I can definitely see it's not far away.

That gives me hope. I just got Valkyrie Chronicles today, so my XCOM itch will be scratch for the next few weeks.

I really haven't had a chance to play this for very long, but I love that it's using the Rogue Legacy idea of offspring with parent traits.

Well shit, that’s all you had to say to pique my interest.

its on a much smaller scale though. the battles are tiny compared to xcom.

          but its still pretty neat

I'm really interested in this for the "time spanning" thing. Absolutely on my radar.

I think I'll wait until the finished version for this one. Hopefully it gets there!

The response to this should be interesting, given what happened with Spacebase DF-9.

Eh. The response to Spacebase DF-9 was overblown. They ended up featuring the majority of the features they had promised - leaving out something like 20%. The only thing I'd like to see them do with 'Chalice in Early Access is to be more upfront about design changes. Spacebase seemed to have features slated for removal long before the announcement but the radio silence didn't soften the blow.

Ah, so that's why I just got an email saying they were giving out beta keys to the $20 kickstarter backers like myself. Was previously a $40 bonus.

Haven't really seen any buzz about this. How the mighty have fallen :(

Broken Age seemed to miss their targets, Costume Quest 2 was out of the bestseller list almost immediately (and didn't even crack it leading up to Halloween).

I will probably buy Massive Chalice, and I will definitely get Grim Fandango Remake, but yea, I'm slightly concerned for them.
