My favourite character in WoW has to be Gamon
Gamon was a level 12 Tauren NPC in Orgrimmar that was part of a Rogue pickpocketing quest, thus targetable by Horde players. Gamon died millions of deaths, because as soon as he spawned the nearest player would oneshot him. I've seen players coming up with thousand of ways to kill him or play around with him, kiting him over the entire world and poor Gamon never stood a chance.
But then the Cataclysm came along, and Blizzard upgraded him to a Lvl 85 Elite. So many people saw Gamon, threw a spell or sword at him and suddenly got murdered by an agry and vengeful Tauren. Entire raid parties were formed and all were destroyed by Gamon, the new ruler of Orgrimmar.
Gamon while not lore-heavy or rare/special embodies, for me, Blizzard's relation with its players: they recognise what players enjoy in their games and make sure it is lifted to more relevant and upgraded role.-

A priest mind controlled Gamon once and we had a bunch of people throw buffs on him as he jumped around Org. I even have a picture! http://chattypics.com/files/Gamonbuffed_6dr6sxdhho.jpg

I miss Lady Katrana Prestor in Stormwind.
In vanilla and TBC, entrance to the Onyxia raid was locked to an attunement quest line. It was a lengthy chain that was different for horde and alliance factions. As alliance players progressed through the questline, one of the last parts was a long march from the front gates to the throne room in the Stormwind Keep. This look a long time to walk at the pace of the NPC.
Hanging out in Stormwind we would see the NPC shouts. We would started spamming General and Trade chat that we were giving away "Free gold in the keep". swarms of low level people would show up to collect free gold. We would tell them to wait a moment until the mobs spawns and they could loot them for lots of gold.
Lady Prestor stood in the throne room, and the final unraveling of the quest line was the revealing that she was secretly the dragon Onyxia. She would transform and 8 guard dragons would spawn and kill all the players if they attempted to interfere with the quest (or even if you just watched).
In TBC the moved the battle masters to the Keep and that area was always populated. Even more people died.
I don't know if it was just my servers or others did the same thing. But if you were alliance on Stormreaver or Korgath back in 2004-2008 You've seen my yell for FREE GOLD IN THE KEEP. Followed by low level players complaining the they got killed by dragons and needed a res. -
Hellscream. I remember the first time I came upon his monument ( http://www.wowwiki.com/Monument_to_Grom_Hellscream ) when I was very low level in vanilla WoW with a friend. It was the first time I realized how fleshed out the background lore was.
Here lies Grommash Hellscream, Chieftain of the Warsong Clan.
In many ways, the curse of our people began and ended with Grom.
His name meant 'giant's heart' in our ancient tongue. He earned that name a hundred-fold as he stood alone before the demon Mannoroth - and won our freedom with his blood.
Lok'Tar ogar, big brother. May the Warsong never fade.

My steam name comes from my Undead Shadow Priest "Eirei". I made him back in the Burning Crusades era, played so much Alterac Valley I one day noticed that I have become exalted with the AV faction and bought a cool wolf mount. Faction rep is best when you wouldn't even change how you play to get it.

There were a lot but Yogg Saron was definitely up there. Extremely well designed boss from easy mode to ultra hard. So many hours of wiping on that boss to finally defeating him was so good.
Probably one of the more amusing moments was one of our raiders who had a shitty pc (like I swear half the people playing WoW have) couldn't see the clouds on phase 1.
So we had to have him stand in the corner till we got to phase 2. -

My favorite character is Taruk, the Tauren pirate hanging out at Scalawag Point. He gives you a quest to collect "Silvermoon" Harry's debt and promises you a cut. When you turn in the quest, he says "Here's your cut," but the quest doesn't actually yield any gold reward, just experience. He kept your cut and tricked you into thinking you got it! What a scalawag!

I still have the faded photograph you get from the quest line somewhere in the bank on my original character. I'm not sure why that photo resonated with me so much when I first saw it, but I remember being genuinely moved by the thought of this amnesiac lost in the wilderness and there being someone out there who cared about him, and who he didn't quite remember but who probably missed him very much. I couldn't bear the thought of discarding that photo, even if Linken didn't want it any longer.
Then I was like WHAT THE SHIT AJAX IT'S JUST A GAME THEY'RE NOT REAL WHY CAN'T YOU CONNECT LIKE THIS WITH THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU HOLY SHIT DUDE LEAVE THE GOD DAMNED HOUSE and this is why I drink.

Budd Nedreck. "AAAA-HOY!" "I'm SAAAAAILING!" the funniest thing about the intro to Vashj'ir. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCbMchvW6T0

Deathwing's the most memorable character for me. 500+ attempts for my guild's server first kill. My internet at home was acting up and so I was playing in a cyber cafe when we killed it. There was a small crowd of people at the cafe watching me play. I was SO happy to finally kill it. When you kill the boss on a server for the first time, every single player on the server receives a message with who killed it. I was immediately flooded with whispers congratulating me and asking me what dropped.

Maiev Shadowsong aka The Warden.
Also, not exactly a "character" but Unborn Val'kyr is my favorite battle pet (I'm hopelessly addicted to pet battle PvP): http://wow.zamimg.com/uploads/screenshots/resized/368381.jpg -

lol I remember that moment vividly. :D
I was busy enjoying the lore text when I clicked on Executus I didn't know finishing that conversation with him summoned the big guy! :O
But I also remember we one-shotted Ragnaros after "too soon" and the Arcanite Reaper dropped for me. I was so excited I got the best axe I was shaking and couldn't equip it lol!
Rustblade's history is storied with those things. I leveled up to 60 in Vanilla after we killed Tyrande too, remember that? :>

I really liked Balnazzar. Adolescent me thought all the dreadlords looked like badasses. His story was intriguing. Sure he played a bit of a bumbler in Frozen Throne, failing to stop Arthas... then failing to stop Sylvannas. But he made a come back in WoW.
The part of WoW that really grabbed me was the first time I went into the Scarlet Crusade dungeon. The dungeon was great and the whole lore behind the Scarlet Crusade was really well done. But it wasn't until you go into Stratholme that you learn the truth. The Scarlet Crusade is actually Balnazzar's puppet army, he is using these xenophobic assholes to further his agenda! Totally awesome revelation. -

My favorite character is Grom Hellscream. When I first went to Orgimmar in World of Warcraft vanilla, I was so excited to see the tree that had the horns of Mannoroth. A Pit Lord he killed in Warcraft 3. :)
I don't know how I feel facing him in the new expansion pack. Here is the savior of the old Horde and he's now he's the enemy? hmmmmm ;'( -

Aedis Brom and Christoph Faral
I love these guys. I have followed them around and listened to their stories. They need to a wing in the Cavern of Time for just their adventures. If WoW was real, I would hurry to the pub each night and buy them a round for another story. These guys made the world and events seem deep and connected, not just a bunch of stupid Go Kill quests with a few meaningless words for the story.
Remember when Danath gathered all the mercenaries of Stormwind together and we marched to fight at Nethergarde?
Aye and thanks for letting me carry my own hand back to the priests that night.
You are constantly surprising me with what a person can live through. -

Teron Gorefiend! He had that awesome quest in Shadowmoon Valley where you thought you were helping out some spirit and then BAM, turns out that spirit is Gorefiend and you just helped him get his gear back! Then you fight him in Black Temple with possibly my favorite WoW quote: "YOU! Will show the proper respect!" Also, his voice actor is also Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach.

Van Cleef, not for his character, but for what led to him. Working midnights at the time 4 friends of mine and I decided in the old days to do Deadmines after work. Between our healer falling asleep mid-battle all through the instance and the respawns, we spent 3 hours wiping, and then after we finally killed Van Cleef (exhausted) we all forgot to go out the back exit. At 60, I went back to Deadmines naked, and murdered them all with my bare hands.
