X-Wing and Tie Fighter special editions headline new GOG deal with Disney

As part of a new deal with Disney/Lucasfilm games, GOG.com will offer 30 new games, including the first-ever downloadable versions of the classic X-Wing and Tie Fighter.

There's a special place in many Star Wars fans' hearts for the classic X-Wing and Tie Fighter games. In fact, they ranked #79 and #15 respectively on our Shacknews Chatty Community Top 100 PC Games of All-Time list. They're also games that have been long overdue for digital remasters and, thankfully, GOG.com is ready to release these LucasArts classics as part of a new deal with Disney/LucasFilm.

GOG (via Kotaku) announced the deal this morning on their forums, (Update: The link has since been pulled) adding that the deal will also include Sam & Max Hit the Road, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Repubic. These are among 30 Disney/Lucasfilm games that will release DRM-free, starting on Tuesday. In the case of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and Sam & Max Hit the Road, it'll be the first time they'll be available as digital downloads.

Thanks to Chatty poster cheapito_ for the tip.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

God, I hated the Assault Gunboat.

It and the Missile Boat were obviously designed to make up for the imbalance in Star Wars' ships... they were afraid gamers wouldn't like that snap-like-a-twig fragility in every mission.

Me, I'd have probably kept it as canon and stopped at the TIE Advanced.

I hated the missions for the gunboat more than the craft itself.
At the end of battle one there was a gunboat mission where some of the opposition had advanced missiles. That was not pleasant.

I hated missiles so much in TIE Fighter. If you were in any kind of basic TIE, you were basically fucked if you were in a hairball and a missile locked onto you.

I hated it at first but then they made you fly so many missions with it I finally made peace with it.

Personally, my favorite ship was the TIE interceptor. Fast, and armed with four lasers to chew up rebel scum.

However, no matter what ship you were in, fighting A-wings was such a pain in the neck.

Disney gotta be making money on that 4 billion dollar purchase of Star Wars and we gamers love that fact. BUT alas, we can never truly go back to the 90's and play these games for the first time again, hopefully this just adds weight to Disney's decision to make new Xwing and Tie Fighter games.

Yeah, I have fond bits of memory of these games, but 20 something years is long enough that I don't remember them very well.

Hopefully they've been rewritten enough to scale correctly and we're not stuck playing at 320x200 (or 640x480, which ever the res was for those games).

320x200 originally, and the main UI stayed that way. In the collector's edition, you could play missions at 640x480.
