Minecraft developer founders will not be joining Microsoft aquisition

As rumored, Mojang's founders including Markus 'Notch' Persson will not be joining Microsoft once the company is acquired.

News of Microsoft’s acquisition of Minecraft studio Mojang is just rolling out all over the Internet as the company announced it spent $2.5 billion to acquire the Swedish studio. Prior to the official news, we heard rumors of Markus ‘Notch’ Persson’s possible departure after the deal is done. Now that the news of Mojang’s acquisition has been officially announced, we now know of Persson's future plans, and it won’t be with Microsoft.

In a statement published on Mojang’s website, we learned he has been attempting to work on selling the company due to being overwhelmed by the responsibility of owning such a globally significant organization. “Over the past few years he’s made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle,” reads the statement. “The only option was to sell Mojang. He’ll continue to do cool stuff though. Don’t worry about that.”

In case that last paragraph wasn’t enough confirmation for you, the statement becomes a bit more blunt as to Notch and the other founders of Mojang’s future endeavors. “The founders: Notch, Carl [Manneh], and Jakob [Porsér] are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.”

Persson also published his own statement on his personal site. He said he will be going back to Ludum Dares and making smaller games, and avoiding the spotlight. "If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately," he said. "It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity."

He created something simple that resonated with more people than he ever thought possible. I dunno, I think that's pretty cool, worthy of respect anyways.

Right, I get that and agree. It sounded more like he was saying he had respect for him because he didn't join MS with the deal.

While Rice-Rocketeer is a terrible human being and Comminazi, I don't think that was his intent.

Why would he need to join MS? He's got better things to do, like swim in his money

He made 2 billion fucking dollars making a game with about squares. I'd say yep, that gets some respect

Only he knows what he's been through but I'd think with the millions he already had he could have brought on enough people to handle everything such that he wouldn't have to feel like it was all on him.

Notch has been like a deer in headlights for years. I'm much more curious to see what Jens does now, and I wonder how much compensation he will receive from this big ass deal.

I don't think it would matter how far he stepped away from that game while remaining inside Mojang, he'd still always be the figurehead whether he wants it or not.

Having money and having vision are two different things. I don't think having vision or business sense was his strong suit. Maybe he'll keep making games or just enjoy the coke filled parties until the end of the world, whatever it is, Minecraft is probably in better hands now.

Minecraft has been out of his hands for the last 2 years though.

Yes, but still within the companies that is more or less under his watch. I'm just saying, in whatever direction it goes in, MS most likely has a plan and a vision of where to take it. Which is something that really hasn't been apparent in the game for some time.

He said he wasn't interested in running something that had become so large. I can understand that. It becomes more like an accountant or supervisor than the developer he wants to be.

Plus it's just an incredible life-altering amount of stress for someone without those ambitions. Even if he delegates all the work, as long as he owns the company everything is still ultimately his responsibility.

He addresses this notion in his letter. To paraphrase, he said he basically had nothing left to contribute to minecraft as he had completely handed off programming responsibilities for it. He was told to stay around as the cultural leader of the company, but spoke at length around the reasons why he didn't feel like a cultural leader.

It looks to me like MS have gone and done a THQ pay a silly sum of money for nothing.

The loss of Notch and the rest for all that money all you get is 2 names Mojang and Minecraft but i do not think MS have the skill or people to do any thing with them.

All they wanted was one name: Minecraft. Whether or not Microsoft will accomplish nanything with the brand remains to be seen, but it certainly has the potential, and they wouldn't really have gained anything by keeping Notch onboard even if he did want to.
