The Internationale Funkausstellung (or IFA as its better known) is currently underway in Berlin, Germany. The show is an annual trade show that showcases the world’s upcoming consumer electronics and home appliances. So consider the show an even more International version of CES. As such, a number of popular consumer electronics companies are in attendance, including Sony.

The popular consumer electronics company has announced its flagship Sony Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, the last of which is an 8-inch tablet setting its sights on the iPad Mini. If you’re a PlayStation 4 owner that is currently in the market for a new smartphone or tablet, you might want to keep an eye on the Xperia Z3 line as its the first mobile devices that includes Remote Play.

Yes, you heard that right. Owners of any of the new Xperia Z3 mobile devices will be able to access their PlayStation 4 through the use of its Remote Play feature. The way this works is through a new controller mount that is attached to the DualShock 4 in order to connect it to the Z3 device. Unfortunately, it looks like that’s the only way to connect the DualShock 4 to the Xperia Z3s, leaving us to wonder why Bluetooth wasn’t an option in this case. When you consider you’ll be able to play your PlayStation 4 while you’re on the go, then this is just a small price to pay to be able to play your console when you’re away.

The Xperia Z3 line is expected to be released in the US later this fall.

I don't know why they keep beating this house, in trying to reach out to a market that doesn't want their phones for gaming, they're diluting their brands (particularly Vita) for those that do, it seems.

Devil's advocate. The DS and Vita are being assaulted from two fronts. Mobiles own the handheld game market, and tablets are pushing their way into the at home mobile gaming scene.

I think Sony and Nintendo both realize this from the remote play function and the Wii U gamepad. Couples rejoice over the Wii U gamepad and there is something satisfying about remote playing to a PS3 via a Vita and playing ICO in bed.

IMO Sony should just bring the remote play software to android and ios and not have it tied down to a strict mobile Sony device.

Agreed. My Xperia Play from 2011 can stream OnLive, so there's really no reason to limit it to those phones. Xperia Play is still mote suited for this as gamepad is attached to phone

Bringing it to os platforms, they'd have to charge for the app, I'd assume to commoditize it. I am curious if that would generate backlash. I guess they could do both, free on their tablets, $20 on others.

They could have bypassed all this by making the vita a phone

The z3 compact looks amazing and is only 500€. If the new moto x is actually huge, this will be my next phone. My n4 is falling apart.
