Club Nintendo 2014 'Elite Rewards' released
All digital games, all the time
Club Nintendo, the loyalty program that awards points ("coins") for buying and registering hardware and games, has revealed its cumulative Platinum and Gold rewards for this year. In a marked change from the usual, this time all of the rewards are game downloads.
As usual, the rewards are split into two tiers based on cumulative coins earned in the past year. Platinum members get to choose one game from a selection of newer downloadable games, while Gold members get their choice of Virtual Console games. Platinum members could opt for a Gold game if they wish.
Platinum rewards are Game & Wario, NES Remix, Earthbound, Dr. Luigi, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Fluidity: Spin Cycle, Dillon's Rolling Western, and Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move. The Gold rewards are Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, Donkey Kong 3, WarioLand 2, Metroid, and Super Mario Land 2.
Club Nintendo has given digital rewards for its annual promotion before, but also offered physical items like posters and pins. This is the first year that all of the rewards have been game downloads.

Club Nintendo is a wonderful system that rewards gamers for participating. Last year I bought a 3dsXL and enough games to reach platinum status. I got a couple games along the way, a handsome draw-string pouch to hold my system, and a prize at the end of the year.
The website design is beautiful and refreshing.
The only problem is the system is ripe for exploitation. This could be why the prizes are digital this year.

This seems like a good value to me, and I've been a PS+ subscriber since the start.
Nintendo has been pretty generous between this and the digital promotion. I don't understand people crying over free things not being good enough, but then again I don't like physical goods. Maybe I'd be more annoyed if I wanted a calendar or CD instead of a game.

These digital rewards cost Nintendo practically nothing. They're being cheap.
These rewards aren't free. This is supposed to be your reward for buying and registering a lot of Nintendo products. You're right, no one is forcing them to run a loyalty program. They're free to not run it, and customers are free to buy fewer Nintendo products. -
To be fair, Nintendo does claim "Members that earn enough Coins during the Club Nintendo year (July 1 - June 30) to reach Gold or Platinum Elite Status will receive exclusive gifts." I wouldn't call rewards that can be purchased by anyone as exclusive. Sure, it's nice they give rewards to their customers but their marketing makes it sound as if you'll be getting something you cannot get anywhere but Club Nintendo.
