Kinect v2 for Windows coming later this month
Microsoft has announced that the new Kinect will launch on PC on July 15 for $199.
Microsoft has announced a price and release date for the new Kinect v2 on PC. The motion device will launch on July 15 for $199.
The Microsoft Store (via IGN) is selling pre-orders for the device. Like the first Kinect, the PC version is likely to be used for purposes beyond gaming. The product description notes that developers can use it to build "interactive voice- and gesture-based applications for the Windows desktop and Windows Store."
Keep in mind that you can't plug this in to your Kinect-less Xbox. It may give us some idea of what to expect for standalone pricing, though, as Microsoft's Phil Spencer has previously said that buying the Xbox One and Kinect bundled together would be cheaper than buying them individually.

Can you find out whether signing up to the developer program indeed costs $400 to get access to the Kinect v2 SDK (since the Kinect ships without any software)?

Not trying to spread rumors but that's what it supposedly used to cost. I can't find anything about where to download the Kinect v2 SDK.

Though it mentions it would get you the final build, so perhaps this is just replacing the pre-release Kinect for Windows program? Confusing as hell.

I thought so too, but I've heard there's a fair bit of latency involved that could make it bad for VR.

i don't see what the issue is with price. you guys drop $200 on keyboards and $100 on mice. it's a pretty advanced piece of hardware. imagine the UI and game hacks for it in a couple of years!
