Watch Dogs review: hacking the GTA formula

When you make a Grand Theft Auto clone, you better make sure it provides some special ingredient that makes it stand out. Red Dead Redemption takes place in the Old West, and Sleeping Dogs lets you run wild through Hong Kong. Then you have Watch Dogs, which proves that Ubisoft isn't putting all its concentration into its Assassin's Creed endeavors, and provides the inventive hook of manipulating the world with gadgetry.

The Order: 1886 preview: warfare in Whitechapel

Victorian-era London is in peril in The Order: 1886, the upcoming PS4 exclusive from Ready at Dawn. Since its original announcement nearly a year ago, the studio had gone to painstaking measures to detail their ambitious plans to seamlessly blend cinematics and gameplay. However, very little had been revealed in terms of gameplay. Shacknews recently had the opportunity to finally go hands-on with Ready at Dawn's third-person action shooter. In addition to seeing some more of the game's story, the brief demo also showed off some of its cover system and its unique weaponry.

The Evil Within preview: Ruvik's cube of death

Survival horror has seen somewhat of a renaissance in the last few years, with games like Outlast and the Amnesia series reminding players what it's like to be at the mercy of something otherwordly without the aid of a giant gun with a bottomless barrel. But if anyone deserves to lead the new parade of survival horror games, it's Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. He's looking to do so with a blood-curdling scream in his upcoming scare-fest, The Evil Within, though it's going to come later than expected. Originally set to release on August 26, the game has been pushed back to October 21 to bring it closer to Halloween. Shacknews bravely stepped into the dark to try out Bethesda and Tango Gameworks' survival horror romp. The results may have resulted in the purchase of several night lights, but they also proved promising for fans of the genre.

Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed: connected, or just Easter eggs?

Watch Dogs is out today, providing Ubisoft with a second open-world franchise about a fashionable anti-hero with access to deadly arsenal of special tools. Its similarities to Assassin's Creed may seem skin-deep, but the team has been dropping clues all along that the two may share more in common than superficial design elements.
