Defiance MMO goes free-to-play in time for season two
"As we head toward Season 2 of the Defiance television show, we expect that many new fans will want to join the world of Defiance, and having a system that allows them to experience the Defiance universe for free is good for everyone," Trion explained.
Trion World's Defiance MMO is going free-to-play. Running concurrently with the Syfy show of the same name, the change will go into effect in time for season two of the show, which begins June 19th. "As we head toward Season 2 of the Defiance television show, we expect that many new fans will want to join the world of Defiance, and having a system that allows them to experience the Defiance universe for free is good for everyone," Trion explained.
The free-to-play transition will begin on PC on June 4th, and will be available on PS3 on July 15th. Xbox 360 players will eventually be able to go free-to-play, but Trion explains that they are "currently working with Microsoft." Console owners will have to link their accounts in order to access any free-to-play benefits.
Free players will be able to have two character slots, two loadouts, which hold up to 35 inventory slots and 50 ark keys. However, current owners will have four character slots, five loadouts, and 70 inventory slots. Additionally, any current players will retain all their existing characters once the free-to-play transition hits--even if they go above the free-to-play limit. Current owners of the game will also get 1000 Arkforge, which can be used to refine and upgrade weapons. In addition, owners of the boxed or digital version of the game will also get a 30-day Paradise Patron pass--the game's optional subscription service.
Paradise Patrons get a 10% discount on all items in the in-game store, as well as a 20% boost to skill, XP, and reputation gain. In addition, patrons will get login bonuses, including a "daily grab bag" of two-hour boosts.

But is there a reason to even play? Arkfalls were an interesting gimmick but incredibly repetitive, shallow, and only had a tiny amount of tactics required. I haven't kept up with the dlc but prior to that, there was very little gear grind / gear improvement so after a few hours you're just running around shooting stuff purely for the sake of shooting things.

The game has been really cheap for quite a while and selling in game items on top. At least this will help populate the servers with people willing to try it for free and I expect that the servers will hit peak load sometime in the middle or end of the TV season before it settles for the off season time.
