Sony Pictures has announced that Pixels, a movie inspired by classic video games, will release on May 15, 2015. It stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage, and will begin filming next month.

Pixels is based on the 2010 short film (below) by Patrick Jean. The story revolves around aliens misunderstanding classic games as a declaration of war, so they naturally come to earth to fight us using video games as their battle plans. Variety (via GameSpot) gave the release date. Check out the short below for an idea of what we might see in the feature film.

That ended up being a bit more imaginative than I expected. Mixing Freedie Wong's take would be really good. Minus half that listed cast though.

I can only assume this will be a masterpiece like the rest of Sandlers movies.

I just assume he's doing it for his kids. I can appreciate that angle at least.

I liked the 2nd half of Click, actually. But yeah, after Billy Madison, Sandler was pretty much through.

So it'll be 2 hours of that one short from a Futurama episode? And Adam Sandler? But probably no Rush soundtrack.

Wow! I can barely contain the excitement...
