LucasArts canceled game starring Darth Maul

Developer Red Fly (TMNT: Out of the Shadows) was at work on a game starring Darth Maul in 2010, but a failed buyout had LucasArts shutter the project.

In 2010, developer Red Fly (the studio behind TMNT: Out of the Shadows) was working on a game to star The Phantom Menace antagonist Darth Maul. The game, codenamed Damage, was to be a stealth action game similar to Batman: Arkham Asylum. Maul would have been a deadly assassin, but he would be taken down with only a few hits. It was aiming for release on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.

According to the latest issue of Game Informer (via IGN), the game had conflicting influences on the story direction. The developer wanted it to tell Darth Maul's origin story, but LucasArts wanted it to connect with the character's reintroduction in the Clone Wars cartoon series. George Lucas himself even stepped in, shifting the direction to two other Sith Lords from the Dark Horse comics: Darth Krayt and Darth Talon.

LucasArts considered purchasing Red Fly, but when that didn't happen, the company canceled the game in 2011. That forced layoffs, but as we know now, it was just a precursor to Disney canceling all LucasArts projects after its acquisition. Damage may not have seen the light of day in any event, depending on its development time.

The suggestions from George were amazingly bad. It's clear he's no longer sane.

I get why an origin story stealth game - because Sith were thought to be gone, and the canon is that they aren't known about until Ep 1. But, I don't think that makes a good game. Why have a known force user and not make a game with him using his force powers? So, leading up to the Clone Wars series would seem to make more sense.

Lucasarts is the proverbial childhood friend you used to play with and hang out then as you got older had little control over their bad decision making, and dangerous habits and ended up watching them die at too far a young age. Forever more every happy memory your recall always ends with the sad remembrance how it all ended and you just think to yourself, what a shame.
