Did you miss the season four premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones? You'll be able to catch up for free--regardless of your subscriber status--on Xbox Live. The episode will be free to access on Xbox until April 14.

While the promo could be to make up for HBO Go's outage on Sunday night, HBO told Variety that this is merely a "sample strategy" meant to "drive non-HBO subscribers to sign up for the service." According to the rep, the deal has been in the works for some time.

Accessing the HBO Go app still requires an Xbox Live Gold account, and do note that HBO Go cannot be purchased as a standalone service. You'll need to subscribe via your cable provider.

Update: A post on Xbox Wire points out that the free episode can be accessed even without an Xbox Live Gold account.

Maybe a silly question but my Gold subscription ran out (we had the "Family" plan for$99 which was AWESOME for 4 XBL accounts, and they discontinued it so I haven't resubbed) but I do have a bunch of "Free 1-month trial" cards that came with various games: Can I use those to access XBL again and the HBO GO app and ultimately watch this GoT episode?

Discovered last night that the PS3 app doesn't work if you're a Comcast subscriber. It works for seemingly most other providers, once again proving how horrible Comcast is.

Yeah, that pissed me off. Comcast is being really shitty about that. We bought a Roku for our daughter because it had HBO Go, but they won't allow it.
