Blizzard has gone to great lengths to make sure its entry to the MOBA genre, Heroes of the Storm, is accessible to players of any experience level. That's all well and good, but how does it play competitively? Blizzard's developers recently took to the HotS arena, where game director Dustin Browder and Kevin Knocke provide commentary and an insight into how the new MOBA will operate in a competitive atmosphere.

This session takes place on the Dragon Shire map, where Browder and Knocke explain the map's objectives and the events that can pop up over the course of the game. The commentary team also provides valuable explanation on each of the characters featured, as well as their strengths, weaknesses, special abilities, and tactics.

Check out the video below for the full game, which lasts a little over 15 minutes.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

This is looking interesting, though I'm not a big fan of Dustin Browder's commentary. Doing commentary well takes some fucking black magic and genetics.

I'm looking forward to this. I have an itch for another MOBA game but I'm done with the complexity and time investment of a game like DotA or even LoL. HotS looks a lot easier to get into and less demanding of your time.

It looks like a higher-fidelity LoL. I expected a much cooler looking map look from Blizzard.

Blending all of Blizzard's properties into one game makes an incoherent mess.

Dragon Shire. Blizzard are good at making games, not so much at writing lore.

I guess in this regard an Allstars game suits them to the ground.

Purge talked about it after Blizzcon, very informed and balanced opinions: http://youtu.be/6ip3I-7H6CQ

Basically, it is Diretide from Dota 2 done as an entire game. Objectives and way more team fighting right from the start.

He also brings up why disables and CC can't be as powerful as in Dota, and he's right. It was one of my big complaints right after playing it but he nailed why it can't really be the same.

the "no items" element is my biggest concern but I'll reserve judgement 'til I've played it.

SC2 and Hearthstone are good and people seem fairly happy with the recent Diablo patch so Blizzard must still know what they're doing when it comes to such design decisions.

I don't care for the mounts and it seems pretty slow. Took a lot to bring down one hero. I liked the game type though.

When I played it at Blizzcon hardly any CC, everyone levels together so no xp gaps, and

      Mounts = hats

I had the same CC/disable complaint after I played it, but Purge made a great point in his video why a bunch of heroes with 1.5 second disables wouldn't work in a game that is based almost entirely on teamfights. It makes sense in a game like Dota that is based around risk/reward in ganks, lanes that are split up because of the way XP is distributed, etc etc.

No XP split in HotS means that everyone teamfights from the start. Teamfights from the start means that disables/CC can't be powerful like in Dota, otherwise a subset of heroes would be super OP at all stages in the game.

HotS may not end up being for me but the design decisions make sense.
