Assassin's Creed 4 'Freedom Cry' becomes standalone game on PS3, PS4 & PC

Ubisoft has dabbled in standalone DLC before, notably with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, but is now curiously turning some already-released DLC into a standalone game. Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry, as it's called, will be release via download for PS4 and PS3 on February 18, then PC on February 25. Why no Xbox editions? Only Ubi knows.

Here's a trailer touching on the difficult tone the story attempts to take:

I was hoping that we'd be seeing more Black Flag DLC. This... is not what I wanted. :-P

Maybe they'll have it for the WiiU also.

Yes, weird that it's not done for Wii U since Ubi has been doing good job with Wii U games so far.

making standalone products with the assets of their AAA titles is one of the smartest things ubi is doing. Short dev times, keeps the studio working and maximises their potential market by not requiring the original title.

More like "no dev time" - this isn't a new product with existing assets like Blood Dragon was, this is an existing product being repackaged.

What is the problem with that?

A cheap standalone might not be a bad idea at all. Folks who pick it up on the cheap and like what they see might pop the extra ducats for the main game.

No problem, per se. But where I bought both Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon, I see no reason to buy the standalone Freedom Cry here.

Nor do I think there's a huge audience of Assassin's Creed fans who didn't buy Black Flag, and thus are a candidate to pick this up.

And honestly, given that Blood Dragon owned and Freedom Cry was meant to be pretty good, it's fine by me.

I'd buy it if they stripped out uplay.

This is nowhere close to as fun as the real game. :P

Yea, i felt like i was suddenly playing AC3 with some AC4 boat play but worse; instead of a proper AC4 DLC.

That's pretty much it. The "additional one hour of gameplay" on the Playstation 3/4 was even worse. It felt like a demo of the Vita game more than anything else.

Weird that no Wii U or 360 campaign will be available.

I've been very close to getting AssCreed 3 and 4 for Wii U. Especially since the third one is 10€ now in many places. Never really been interested in the series, but the third one kind of started tingle a bit since the setting is very interesting.
