Final Fantasy 4: The After Years is out today on iOS and Android, just in case you're still curious as to what happens after the events of the original 1991 classic. Although if your curiosity is really piqued, get ready to shell out your wallet; it costs $15.99.

If this new handheld version of the FF4 sequel sounds a bit pricey, there are some alternatives. You can still pick up the game as a downloadable title on Wii for a mere 800 points ($8). You can also pick it up for your PSP as part of Final Fantasy 4: The Complete Collection for close to the same price.

Whatever you decide, check out the trailer below. FF4: The After Years is available on the App Store and the Google Play store.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

They seem to be using this price a lot. I guess it's working for them?

On the one hand I'd guess so, otherwise they would have lowered the price and/or abandoned the smartphone platforms by now.

On the other hand, I halfway expect that they make so much money on all their other games that they don't really care if the game sells well or not - with one exception all of these $15.99 titles are repackaged ports from other platforms and they might just see these ports as filling a slot. They may think it does more damage to their branding to have them be at a lower price than not sell at the higher price.

        But who knows.

I think you're probably closer to the truth about perceived value of the brand. That would make sense from a product management perspective.

Yes and no. I remember Final Fantasy: All the Bravest started at $3.99, but it was egregious (to put it kindly) about microtransactions.

I think what he's saying is - are enough people buying the game at $15.99 or whatever to make it worthwhile for them? There's so many people who think asking more than $0.99 for an app is outrageous that I wonder what their sales are like for this. In theory by being 16x the price of Angry Birds they only have to sell 1/16 as much as Angry Birds to make the same amount of money (i.e., putting aside Apple's cut for a moment, to make $100,000 Angry Birds has to sell 100,000 copies, whereas these $15.99 games only have to sell 6,250 copies).

I got to play the chrono trigger port recently and the simulated analogue stick controls were terrible. Does anyone know if the other JRPG games play just like it? I don't really want to put down money for something I'll abandon after a few minutes.

I enjoyed FF3 on my android phone.. most mobile games are pure junk anyways. I'd rather pay $15 for one purchase than 99 cents on 15 trash shovelware mobile games.

Anyone played this? I have FF4 complete on Vita and am about to beat the original game and am wondering how the after years will stack up. Guessing not as good, but hey, if it's enjoyable then I'll jump right into it.
