The voice-overs will be available as free DLC for two weeks following the launch of the game. Afterwards, the Japanese Voice-Over Pack will be offered as paid DLC. According to Square Enix, the Pack also includes different lip-synching, so that it will be "natural" regardless of which language you choose to play in.
This is the first time the series has ever offered Japanese voice-overs. For fans, hopefully this is the beginning of a now-permanent trend.

Seriously the reason I hacked my console is so I can play undub versions.
I understand that original japanese VO is expensive (licencing fees) but sheesh - you could give us at least a legal paid DLC option.-
I've been using http://www.wanikani.com/ to learn the Kanjia and Vocab. Its great. I should be able to know every Joyo Kanji in a year.

This right here is one of my biggest issues with anime or games from Asian developers. The random grunts, groans, and gasps. I can see a character is shocked by the look on their face. I don't need to hear, "Oh" or "Hu" or "Uh" every time too.

That took a while. I'm not sure why north america has been such a hold out on Japanese voice overs. Most international releases for other FF games had them.

Um, not quite. I don't think most people want to pay for a feature that's been standard on DVD's for 15 years.-
It's kind of shifty that they ask you to eventually pay for it if you missed it during the first couple weeks. It's not like any extra work has gone in to it. It's all already there from the Japanese release.

original VO costs licencing fees - as I understand if the cast is AAA (Japanese style) these fees can be rather big and you will need to pay for English VO also.
And .. jRPGs are a rather niche product (Well FF is a big fish but still).-
If that's true, that's understandable. I'd pay for the package for most big title JRPGs, just to have it in case of terrible voice work, or one particularly annoying character's voice that ruins everything.

I suspect the "free at first" thing is more because they'd like you to buy their game immediately on release, rather than waiting until it's cheaper, and this is a reward for doing so. Odds are, the only people that care about a Japanese dub are the same ones likely to buy it on release.

Since the BD is region free, is there an international release of the first 2 games with Japanese voice overs and English subs that I can buy from hong Kong or wherever they usually sell those?
When I was playing FFX I was so pissed that the mouth movements did not match up to the crappy English VOs.
