Battlefield 4 lets you lean and peek with Kinect

As promised, the Xbox One version of Battlefield 4 will support Kinect functionality when it launches on November 22nd. But what will you be able to do with Microsoft's bundled camera? You'll be able to lean and peek.

As promised, the Xbox One version of Battlefield 4 will support Kinect functionality when it launches on November 22nd. But what will you be able to do with Microsoft's bundled camera? You'll be able to lean and peek.

The camera will track a player's head position, meaning leaning in real life will let you lean in the game. Polygon says it "makes a big difference" because players won't ahve to strafe out into the open.

Of course, there's voice commands as well. You'll be able to call for a medic, request ammo, and let AI teammates know that you need a ride. You can also thank your virtual squadmates, because it never hurts to be polite to computers.

      Not to complain, but I can't see why these two features couldn't have been done on the PS4 (with the PS4 camera). Just being a devil's advocate. Still, it's great news for those of us getting the Xbox One version.

        They could, but the camera isn't bundled so why spend the time on it?

        we don't really have any idea what the fidelity of the PS4 camera is or how easy it is to develop for right? Like do we even know how close it is in fidelity to the first Kinect vs the new one? Sony hasn't shown basically anything about it, hands on or in a staged PR demo. Fidelity of the voice recognition?

          Plus, doesn't the PS4 camera only track the controller? It doesn't have any body tracking abilities built in. So you'd have to move your controller in the air. Or am I totally wrong on this?

            I have no idea since they've said so little. Sony's focus on putting distinguishing lights on the controllers (for Move and now the PS4) to make it work does suggest something more primitive but it's all very nebulous.

            They've demoed head tracking in a game. That thing with the tiny robots in your controller: you could swat the flying ones and they'd find your head and try to sit on it. Pretty simple compared to kinect mind you.

          it's a pair of 1080p cameras, I think they've said, same as the xbone, though without the nifty time-of-flight depth sensor.

            but a great deal of its fidelity lies in software which we haven't seen in action unless I've missed it

                yeah I mean just realistically what are we getting. Like I think everyone these days is well aware of the difference between advertising you do voice recognition and actually doing it well enough for people to want to use it.

            Sorry they haven't said anything like that.

        I bet you Microsoft has provided a simple API for the Kinect for small gestures such as head tilting. I imagine they are going to be pretty adamant on providing good tools since it's such a huge investment for them this generation.

          Yup, The Kinect API is a big part of the uniqueness of the offering.

        Kinect has a processor that offloads some of the skeletal and gesture detection.

          Kinect1 had an ASIC that turned the laser dot pattern into a depth image, but all higher-level processing was done by the 360. I don't think they've said if kinect2 has anything more complicated.

      I assume that it is really like a button push. You either lean or don't. There's no gradation based on how far you lean, right?

        there's no reason this would need to be the case. The Kinect offers the ability to do it as an analog control rather than a digital one. It would be up to the developer/game.

            you could do a lot of things. A PS3 shooter could've used the DS3 this way, I'm not aware of any that did. I think in practice carefully tilting the controller doesn't feel great when you're also negotiating 2 sticks and other buttons but maybe it was just no one wanted to bother with leaning in their games.

                people seem to like looking and leaning all over the place with a Rift on their head. TrackIR seems well liked too. It's not like it needs to be some over the top exaggerated movement.

        Last I read the new Kinect for Windows is even more expensive than the first gen, which wasn't inexpensive.
