The 2D horror game Dark Matter recently hit digital storefronts, but all is not well. Following complaints regarding the game's abrupt ending, it has been pulled while an external company is reportedly finishing it up.

Gamasutra reports that after developer InterWave Studios' Kickstarter campaign failed, publisher Iceberg Interactive planned to split it up episodically. Episode 1 would then fund the second half. But buyers didn't know that, leading quickly to complaints that it was left unfinished.

Complicating matters are reports that Iceberg let go of most of the team at InterWave between July and August, so the studio is too small to finish the game itself. Iceberg has reportedly hired an external company to handle the ending. Iceberg CEO Erik Schreuder blamed the dissatisfaction with the game description being unclear about its episodic nature.

"At present, the end of the game may cause confusion and is not satisfactory," Schreuder said. "We sincerely apologise for this, as it is not of the standard we would expect. We are working to offer a more conclusive and satisfying ending to the game as we speak and expect a fix to appear as soon we are able to."

According to PC Gamer, at first Good Old Games merely changed the description and offered refunds to dissatisfied players. Now the game has been pulled entirely, and Steam has followed suit. The game ended on a "To be continued" message, but it's difficult to tell when and how that continuation will come.

You either haven't played Dark Matter, HL2, or both. While HL2's ending may have not been a great ending, it at least was an ending. Dark Matter's ending feels like a visual representation of a record scratch.

Great ending? HL2's ending wasn't even a good ending. It was a "Oh shit! We gotta ship this thing or we're fucked" ending.
